I'm sure there are, but nothing springs to mind right at the moment. Usually it's not a question of finding a fit so much as not having the time/bandwidth to make the appropriate storyline happen. There are a great many characters and/or situations I assume are out there in the UF universe somewhere, but have never had occasion to show on screen.

   Question calculated to annoy Uum'y:

Is it true that Hyeruulian warriors ritually devour the hearts of their enemies to gain strength? ^.^

I do not believe that to be the case, but I defer final judgment on the matter to our resident professor of Hyelian studies, PCHammer.

To pose a more serious question, how does being One With The Force interact with the Asgardian afterlife? Can dead Jedi go visit Valhalla?

No, but that has nothing to do with the quality or lack thereof. Comics are, for the moment at least, not on my list of things I can afford to bother with.

While rereading Symphony I've two quick (amd pretty inconsequential) questions.

1. Have we seen onscreen any of the 12 independent systems whose governments fell after Zoner's Usenet post?

2. Was Picard ever convinced to take the Test of Light after Day of Infamy?

Many thanks. :)

Which of the starfighters (or atmospheric fighters) in the WDF does Gryphon consider his favorite?

Is there a starfighter that he dislikes?

What would be consider the toughest adversary starfighters that are currently in the UF universe?

   >Which of the starfighters (or atmospheric fighters) in the WDF does
>Gryphon consider his favorite?

Of the current (ca. January 2410) front-line WDF fighters, the best of the lot in his opinion is probably the VF-11 Thunderbolt, but he hasn't got a lot of time in any of the types that were introduced after he retired from the WDF, so that's not what he would call a really expert opinion. On the fixed-config side of the fence,

Naturally, his favorite fighter of all time remains the VF-1. If he had the time and energy to spare, he would almost certainly have put together a team at the IPO Yards to develop a modernization program that would bring the VF-1 back up to front-line spec and make it competitive with the VF-11 and the next-generation Veritech fighters currently being tested. Alas, he's too busy just now, so the "New Century Valkyrie" will have to remain an enthusiast's dream for the moment.

>Is there a starfighter that he dislikes?

Oh, quite a few, I expect. Back in the Golden Age, he had a special antipathy for ExoSalusia's second-generation Rapier fighters, because they took what had been an outstanding space superiority fighter and gave the new model, for no really explicable reason, the worst cockpit visibility in the industry. He's never been too enamored of GENOM's TIE series either, though the TIE Avenger impressed him enough to become the weapon of choice for the IPO's Babylon Station defense squadron in spite of its less distinguished antecedents.

Of the current generation of fightercraft out there, he doesn't care much for the Starfury's handling characteristics, and the RZ-8 Stinger (AKA "A-Wing") strikes him as fragile and overly twitchy (though the build quality, it has to be said, is excellent). There again, he's not really a current starfighter pilot, so those are mostly impressions gained from a few hours of "courtesy" seat time stolen at odd moments over the last few years.

Worst fighter of all time? The Kilrathi Salthi, hands down. It's cramped, uncomfortable, unreliable, underpowered, undergunned, and wretchedly flimsy, but never mind all that - what's always really amazed him about the Salthi, and not in a good way, is that it can only turn left! Who thought that was a good idea?

>What would be consider the toughest adversary starfighters that are
>currently in the UF universe?

Well, he wouldn't want to try piloting one himself, but it has to be admitted that Earthforce's new-model Starfuries - the ones with atmospheric and ground attack capabilities - are quite capable. And the Kilrathi keep on refining the Dralthi; the current generation of that venerable model can readily challenge a T-65 Dragonfly or TIE Avenger.

Did he also have any thoughts on the VFH-10 AGACS veritech helicopter/jet?

What about the TIE Defender? I remember this one from Star Wars TIE Fighter. It was... Impressive because it had the best of the TIE Advanced and the TIE Interceptor, only better. Faster and more manueverable than the Interceptor, tougher than the Advanced model and with much more firepower. In fact, I think it was one of the few to have projectile launchers.

Is Garth Ranzz in the UF-verse?

(If he's true to his origins, I imagine he's being considered for part of the Pretty Darn Neat Five, or whatever they are after Blades...but I'm not betting on that.)

   >Where exactly do the "Experts of Justice" fit into the structure of
>the IPO?

This has been dealt with at least a couple of times before, over on the UF general board (which was the only UF board at the time). The short version is that Special Assignment 1 (Experts of Justice) is the uppermost publicly-known branch of the IPO tree. They answer directly to the Chief (i.e., those who are Lensmen, which is almost all of them, are Grey Lensmen) and have very wide operational latitude. Only members of Special Assignment 0 have greater individual discretion in how they do what they do.

In the early days of the IPO, members of the public would often confuse the Experts for the IPO itself, causing them to refer to anybody - a Tac Div bluesuiter, a member of the Space Force, an AEGIS op, what have you - as one of the Experts of Justice, but this practice has mostly fallen by the wayside.

Given it was essentially a 'can we actually do it?' project, is warp drive favored in the UFverse by any spacers or naval officers for specific reasons? Maybe the ability to maneuver at FTL speeds, possibly?

It's the only useful way to patrol an area at FTL speeds (since it, unlike all the other methods, doesn't involve entering a parallel dimension).

I *know* this is resurrecting a thread, but I have one question to ask.

We have had Grand Admiral Thrawn in the UFverse. As I recall, Thrawn is a Chiss. We also have the Gamilon Empire. Both of these races are a distinct blue colour.

Is there a link, between these two races in the UFverse in the style of the link between the Romulans and the Vulcans in Star Trek? Or is Thrawn a Gamilon in this universe?

I'm not Gryphon, but I can at least answer this by saying that yes, Grand Admiral Thrawn has been stated to be a Gamilon in UF. (Specifically, he's been identified as such at least in "Twilight", if nowhere else.)

Thrawn's a Gamilon, and thereby hangs one of the UF studio's elder days stories. See, that was Derek Bacon's idea. In Zahn's novels, Thrawn's species is never mentioned, only the fact that he isn't human. It was Derek who connected the dots and realized, "Hey... he's a military genius and he's blue. He must be a Gamilon."

If I thought Timothy Zahn were that nerdy, I'd suspect it to be deliberate. Unfortunately, I can't quite bring myself to believe that of him. (He was, to put it mildly, ecstatic when his agent asked him if he wanted to kick off the EU novels, but I don't think he's in the right age range to have experienced the Gamilon source material. Too bad he continued the WEG-established EU tradition of making a train wreck of much of his mythological additions. Magical-Anti-Force Sloths and Magical Anti-Lightsaber Ore indeed.)

Y'know, I knew about the first one, but I'm going to pretend I still don't know about the second one. Lalala, blanking from mind.

I totally agree with Juniper, I could have gone years without knowing about the second one. Of course, I deny the existence of pretty much all of Kevin J. Anderson's (who needs a lightsaber shoved where the sun don't shine) crap, ANYTHING with the words 'New Jedi Order' on it...actually, now that I think about it, other than the characters from Zahn's first trilogy and his Luke/Mara pairing, the Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squadron books, and 'Courtship of Princess Leia', I'm not acknowledging EU anymore. If for no other reason than you can't reconcile the catastrophic train wreck of EU with Eps. II and III, particularly the EU backstory of Boba Fett.

I like isolated bits of the EU. Kir Kanos. Admiral Thrawn. HK-47.

But most of the stories involving canon characters leave me cold.

After episodes 2 and 3, I consider George Lucas to have forfeited his right to decide what is and is not Star Wars canon.

I'm not sure who should have that right, now, though. Except not KJA.

The second one is actually a logical device(much like the concept of lightsabers shorting out if the blades come into contact with water due to the problems involved with power current thereof).

The problem came when people took the concept a step further and made it 'anti-lightsaber armor, generic brand'. It was supposed to be a death trap material(stab it, causes a power short in the saber and causes it to fry the power pack. Nasty when you give a battle droid an internal chassis of such, or make a door out of it), but like more than a couple concepts, some other author only remembered as much as 'it's an anti-lightsaber substance' and stuck it in without actually doing any research.

There's a laundry list of things from the EU I hate, enough that I don't even consider it in my personal view of the Star Wars universe -- it's just particularly well-funded and -promoted fanfic, really.

Makes me glad that Gryph mostly draws just upon canon for the Star Wars stuff in UF (with a few rather handy exceptions, like Thrawn), even if I do have some issues with how some elements are implemented.

Well, she's about the same age as Devlin, so I expect she's in college someplace as of the current Symphony "now" (early 2410).

This might get answered in eventual annotations (if you decide to go all the way to Symphony #3), but I noticed this today and was curious.

Saionji's roommate his Freshman year at NIT is referred to as "Psycho Boy"...and I have to wonder who could possibly be That Bad when compared to his roommate?

What comic or animation version does Optimus Prime most resemble at the time of 'Cybertron Reloaded'? Is he straight 'G1' with the Powermaster conversion (and his post Hi-Q / Axalon refit) concealed?

Well, none of them, really, which (as you can imagine) makes the art department's job a bit harder. His Maximal-tech "core unit" looks like a man-sized Action Master Optimus Prime, and I expect his main body (the truck cab) resembles G1 Prime/Masterpiece Convoy. Beyond that, things diverge fast.

Would you like to elaborate further? Optimus Prime is one of my favorite characters, in any fandom, ever, and I'd like to know more about your take on him.

(Aside from the Masterpiece Convoy version, my own favorite design is Galaxy Convoy -- he managed to supersede Fire Convoy, which is saying something. Though the new, Classics version, which I don't yet own, is looking to be about equal.)

   It's a two-fer of two unrelated questions.

First, Buckaroo Banzai was a real movie in the Banzai universe; Banzai lived in the UF universe. Was there, in fact, an "Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" film in UF?

Second, (and I apologize if it's been asked in the past) can Omega-2 repair congenital diseases like Lou Gehrig's Disease? I understand that it rewrites certain portions of a person's DNA, especially those dealing with healing and aging, but does it seek out 'broken' genes?

Certainly. It wouldn't be a very good "immunization against death" if it left things like that lying around.

Yikes. If it seeks out "Broken" genes, what's to stop it "fixing" a gene that causes something catastrophic in the user? A "broken" gene that once allowed a species to breathe water... but nothing else?

The fact that it's a work of staggering, breathtaking genius unlikely to be rivaled by any other achievement in the biosciences for at least 10,000 years?

C'mon, guys. It's space opera. Try relaxing a little.

I was re-reading Twilight the other day(couldn't sleep, wanted to watch Rhinox building a bong in my minds eye again), and came across this passage:
Gryphon awoke with a start from a dream of a dark-haired young
man he did not know turning up in the doorway of a room he apparently
lived in, but did not recognize. On a starship? The walls were metal
and the door was a powered bulkhead. The dark-haired man had his hand
in the hand of an exceptionally pretty (if in a rather tomboyish sort
of way, though to Gryphon that was all to the good) woman who looked
very pleased about something, and as the door opened, he grinned with
lots of white teeth and said something.

Was this supposed to be Corwin and Hikaru?

Probably. The original original version of that scene depicted something quite different, but I rewrote it not long after release. Fortunately, the new version was open-ended enough that it didn't need to be adjusted again.
