Why%3F Why are we so willing to %0D%0A%3Eoverlook the faults in what we read more than what we see%3F %0D%0A%3E%0D%0AThere are many differences bewteen the written and visual mediums%2C most notably our attention span. When we watch a half-hour show%2C we expect that over the course of 25 minutes or so we%27ll see some sort of problem%2C the trials of the peoeple involved%2C and either some sort of resolution%2C or at least getting to a logical break before the next episode. However%2C by the nature of the half-hour format%2C it%27s targetting short attention span %22attitudes%22. If we watch for a half hour and nothing happens%2C we feel it%27s wasted.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn the other hand%2C reading is a much more long-term affair. For starters%2C not everybody reads at the same pace%2C plus there%27s all the %22internal%22 visual effects we create to go with it. Additionally%2C since there%27s no arbitrary time limit on length%2C the story is just as long or short as it needs to be to accomplish its goals. Additionallty%2C because we don%27t have all the extraniuos visuals of an animated show%2C the only details we get are the ones the author chooses to show us %22center stage%22. An anime may show something in the background that ends up being important later%2C but there%27s no need to bring our attention to it - it%27s there for us to see if we%27re paying attention. OTOH%2C unless the author writes it%2C and thus brings it right into our face%2C there%27s no way for us to notice it at all. It may be sone subtly and in a way that we don%27t %5Bi%5Drealize%5B%2Fi%5D it%27s important until later%2C but it has to be done. Whether the author and reader%28s%29 realize it%2C IMHO about 99%25 of everything that gets written in a good story is important in some way%2C no matter how small.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd there%27s your answer regarding %5Bi%5DSOS%5B%2Fi%5D - we enjoy what you refer to as %22filler%22 because it really isn%27t. It%27s well written%2C providing additional details that we wouldn%27t otherwise get%2C and most of it does actually matter. I had a discussion with a friend a while back %28between Symphony%27s %231 and %232%2C IIRC%29 about whether SOS could be read and understood by only reading the full movements and not the %22side pieces%22. What we finally agreed on was that yes%2C if you only read the movements%2C you%27d get just enough information to follow the story and keep up. But by doing so you%27d miss no only some good%2C fun readys%2C buy you%27d miss a lot of important background on %5Bi%5Dwhy%5B%2Fi%5D the events in the movements were important.%0D%0A%0D%0AEveryone has their own opinions%2C and you%27re welcome to your own. But you might want to re-evaluate your criteria for classifying something as %22filler%22. We know that after that%2C barring incredible finanacial success of the series%2C we will see no more%2C and%2C as such%2C fans protest time wasting fluff. We want to get to the point and have the story told so that when we get to the end we won%27t be stuck unfulfilled. %0D%0A%0D%0AThe Symphony has no constraints on its length%2C other than perhaps Gryphon%27s lifespan or possible future events%2C such as loss of interest in writing%2C or senility P-%29 %0D%0AAs such%2C we can take side trips without fear of running out of time in which to reach the destination. %0D%0APublished works still need some degree of financial success to continue through multiple books%2C but it%27s much more modest than film%2FTV. So the same thing applies. %0D%0A%0D%0ASide trips are most emphatically not wastes of time if they serve to expand our understanding of the story%2C its setting%2C and its characters. They only become %22filler%22 when they do none of these%2C or fail to entertain%2C or prevent the story as a whole from being told in the space provided. The Symphony%27s side trips do not fail to entertain%2C succeed in expanding the universe and its characters%2C and as such%2C are not filler. It comes down to psychological expectations. In TV%2C movies%2C games%2C etc. people generally expect consistency. Prose%2C meanwhile%2C is expected to be much more balanced. We expect the characters and settings to be developed to a degree almost unheard of in most moving picture entertainment. This is precisely why good books often become lousy movies%2FTV shows. The pacing and expectation between mediums is so different the stories are hard to translate properly. So%2C in the end%2C they aren%27t truly faults so much as facets of the medium. Trilogies can be reduced to one single book if you take out %0D%0A%3Eall the unnecessary %22filler%22 stuff. Many %22New York Times bestseller%22 %0D%0A%3Eseries are just chock-full of filler and often use an entire book just %0D%0A%3Eto advance one single plot point %28e.g.%2C %5Bi%5DThe Wheel of Time%5B%2Fi%5D%29. %0D%0A%3EBut we hardly give the authors a hard time for it. What%27s with that%3F %0D%0A%0D%0ABooks are meant to be big. If we sit down to read a novel%2C we expect it to be long%2C with a lot of detail and plot. We can accept that%2C as long as it stays on track. And I%27ve seen authors get a hard time over it. Take a look at all the abuse Robert Jorden got over his last few books.%0D%0A%0D%0A%3EI once said that I tried imagining %5Bi%5DSymphony of the Sword%5B%2Fi%5D as an %0D%0A%3Eanime series.
