The external damage was described by North American%27s PR offics as %22bent on top and ruptured on the bottom. The fuselage is broke just aft of the cockpit.%22%0D%0A%0D%0ABob White%2C flying one of the chase planes%2C told Crossfield that it looked like there was a small fire on the X-15%2C and that he%27d heard an explosion. Crossfield replied that had a fire light%2C and had started to jettison his fuel when White called back that he didn%27t see the fire anymore. Crossfield then said the fire light was out%2C and he was landing at Rosamond. Crossfield thought everything was fine until he got out of the craft and saw the damage. The break was at the joint between the nose and the LOX tank at a splice joint where the front of the fuselage bolted%2C and the break in the LOX tank was clean. And it turned out that the jettison didn%27t work - there was still 500 pounds of LOX aboard when the nose came down. %0D%0A%0D%0AThey eventually decided the explosion was due to a problem in the ignition related to cold temperatures. Tregaskis quoted Bud Benner%2C co-assistant chief of engineering for the X-15 project as saying %22What we expect happened is that when he turned on his switches this one went out prior to igniting%2C so once the chamber was loaded with LOX and walc %28water alcohol%2C the fuel%29 the result was a gelatine-like substance in the chamber%2C at that temperature. It was like napalm - just as explosive. Maybe the adjoining %28rocket%29 tube set off the napalm bomb.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AWhen asked if there was a connection between the explosion and the structural failure%2C Benner said there was no connection%2C except that the explosion led to an emergency landing in an unfamiliar lake bed%2C which wasn%27t fully marked. %22He dropped off a lot of speed during the last few seconds and ended up with a pretty nose-high attitude. The nose came down plenty hard. Afterward we took the accelerometer off the nose gear. It was calibrated to 12 gs and the indicator was well beyond that%2C maybe to 19. how much of the load was transmitted back to the fuselage I don%27t know. All I can say is%2C it was enough to break it.%22 Benner added that the impact was enough to break 30-40%25 of the bolts adjoining the two sections of fuselage and to pull the heads through.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe fix was to replace the bolts that gave way with heavier ones with bigger heads.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0ARegards%2C%0D%0AJeanne%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Blink%3Awww.jhedge.com%7Chttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.jhedge.com%5D%0D%0AAnime%2FManga Forum%3A %5Blink%3Ago.compuserve.com%2FAnime%7Chttp%3A%2F%2Fgo.compuserve.com%2FAnime%5D 15|5|13|||1||RE%3A X-15 moments %28Moved from UF forum%29|Wedge||19:47:19|08/02/2002|%3E%3E%3EYeah.
