Wierd-ass part of space time that more normal realities %28like%2C oh%2C Earth%27s%29 float in like little bubbles in soup.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DIntelligent Device%5B%2Fb%5D - It%27s a%2C well%2C device%2C with full AI%2C designed to aid in the casting of complex magics. Essentially%2C if a traditional magic wand is an abacus%2C these things are Cray Supercomputers. There%27s circumstantial evidence that they alter their users%27 thought processes%2C since%2C out of four characters under age twelve seen using the things%2C %5Bi%5Dnone%5B%2Fi%5D failed to display a level of understanding and emotional maturity higher than that of most college students.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DTakamachi Nanoha%5B%2Fb%5D - Our main character%2C aged nine or so%2C and apparently precocious as all hell even %5Bi%5Dbefore%5B%2Fi%5D we met her%2C since neither her mother%2C %28retired ninja%29 father%2C nor %28ninja in training%29 siblings failed to notice any sort of change in her responses.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DYuuno Scrya%5B%2Fb%5D - Professional archeologist%2C aged 9-11. Found Really Dangerous Ancient Artifacts on a dig and was shipwrecked while taking them home for study. They%2C and he%2C landed on Earth%2C and%2C after being badly wounded%2C gave Nanoha his Device%2C Raging Heart%2C and recruited her to recover the lost artifacts before one of them activated in the wrong place and wiped out a city or one of the Japanese Home Islands or something.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DFate Testarossa%5B%2Fb%5D - Aged roughly nine or so. Clone%2C with implanted memories%2C of one Alicia Testarossa%2C who had died in the backlash of an experiment conducted by her mother. Mother dear promptly went bats%2C and by the time we met her was looking for Yuuno%27s artifacts so%27s to be able to use them to... well%2C open a gate to heaven%2C so she could bring Alicia back. Fate%2C hoping to win the approval of the doting mother in her inherited memories%2C worked as her main agent to find the things %28with the assistance of her Device%2C Bardiche%29%2C before getting beaten senseless by Nanoha and then switching sides after her mother lost what lucidity she had left and tore a strip off of her for having the nerve to look like Alicia without %5Bi%5Dbeing%5B%2Fi%5D her. %0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DBureau of Space and Time Administration%5B%2Fb%5D - The Coast Guard%2FFBI%2FAnti-Terror Strike Force of the Interdimensional Plane. Besides displaying all the best traits that might or might not be associated with any civil service organization %28competence%2C compassion%2C efficiency%2C etc.%29%2C they carry a lot of firepower and have proved quite willing to use it as neccessary. %0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DLindy Halloran%5B%2Fb%5D - Commanding officer of the BSTA patrol cruiser %5Bi%5DAsura%5B%2Fi%5D%2C which shows up towards the start of the last third of the ruckus kicked up over Yuuno%27s artifacts and has a major role in all events thereafter. Perfectly professional while on-duty%2C she seems to have an extremely warm%2C motherly aura in her private life.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DChrono Halloran%5B%2Fb%5D - Lindy%27s son%2C aged ten or so. Despite his age%2C he%27s a full officer of the BSTA%2C who seems to have a role aboard the %5Bi%5DAsura%5B%2Fi%5D that I%27d sum up as being the resident Expert of Justice - although perhaps without quite as much command authority.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DArf%5B%2Fb%5D - Yes%2C you%27re reading her name right. Fate%27s familiar%2C who%27s a quite competent mage and melee combatant in her own right%2C and %5Bi%5Dtotally%5B%2Fi%5D loyal to her mistress. Can shape-shift between a form resembling a three-hundred pound wolf and a dog-themed version of your Standard Anime Catgirl. Real age is anybody%27s guess%2C looks and acts twenty-ish.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DTsukimura Suzuka%5B%2Fb%5D - A friend of Nanoha%27s from school. Fairly normal example of the %27shy and quiet%27 archetype for her age%2C although it%27s quite clear that her family is quite%2C er%2C genteel and %5Bi%5Dabsolutely filthy f%24%40king rich%5B%2Fi%5D. Has at least a dozen cats.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DAlyssa Bannings%5B%2Fb%5D - Nanoha%27s %5Bi%5Dother%5B%2Fi%5D school friend. Besides being from the %27loud and obnoxious but well-meaning%27 archetype%2C her parents being corporate bigwigs rather than old money%2C and keeping dogs rather than cats%2C she%27s pretty much the same as Suzuka.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bhr%5D%0D%0A%0D%0AFirst impression is that the new opening theme doesn%27t kick %5Bi%5Dquite%5B%2Fi%5D as much ass as the first one%2C but it%27s still way cool.%0D%0A%0D%0AOkay%2C so%2C we meet Wheelchair Girl%2C who likes to read and has a copy of the Necronomicon on her bookshelf. She stays up too late reading something else%2C but then the Book Of Evil breaks its way out of the chains holding it closed %28literally%21%29 and... reveals itself to be an Intelligent Device.%0D%0A%0D%0AThen we get to catch up with the characters we knew last time before catching a scene of some girl in Tim Burton Chic feeding BSTA redshirts to a book suspiciously resembling Wheelchair Girl%27s. Geesh. That thing really %5Bi%5Dis%5B%2Fi%5D the Necronomicon.%0D%0A%0D%0ANext scene introduces Suzuka to Wheelchair Girl%2C whose name%2C we learn%2C is Yagami Hayate. Following Hayate afterwards%2C we get introduced to most of the new characters we see in the opening - Shamal %28tall and blonde%2C like Maria Tachibana with Sumire Kanzaki%27s haircut%29%2C Signum %28redhead%2C and even taller%2C but apparently %5Bi%5Dnot%5B%2Fi%5D your standard anime hothead%29. Cut to high over the city%2C where we confirm that Ms. Spooky-cute is their absent friend Vita%2C and the second werewolf-familiar we saw fighting Arf in the opening is the last of the group%2C Zafira.%0D%0A%0D%0AThen they go hunting for Nanoha%2C apparently for the same reason they were attacking the BTSA guys.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28BTW%2C it is indeed amusing that the villain%27s Devices speak German%2C though it%27s been long enough since my last class in that that I mostly can%27t follow them.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AVita attacks but doesn%27t manage to blindside our heroine - yay%2C Nanoha%2C natural born kunoichi and badass%21 Then we get a nifty fight scene and learn that %5Bi%5DVita%27s%5B%2Fi%5D the resident Angry Chick. With a thing about her hat. This time around%2C Nanoha gets clobbered %28no pun intended%29%2C though personally%2C I wouldn%27t be on %5Bi%5Dthat%5B%2Fi%5D lasting%2C before Fate shows up in the nick of time.%0D%0A%0D%0APaying closer attention to the credits than I had before reveals the interesting fact that Raging Heart and Bardiche%27s voice actors are named Donna Burke and Kevin J. England%2C respectively%2C which isn%27t a surprise%2C given their intonations. OTOH%2C the scriptwriters obviously aren%27t native speakers - I mean%2C %27Put Out%27%3F%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0AJa%2C%0D%0A-n

Vita proves herself to be just as much of a bad-tempered brat as she first seemed - sort of like the fanon-version of Akane Tendo%2C only with a more interesting hammer - before needing to get bailed out by Signum and Zafira. They get to have their first-fight badassery for a bit%2C too%2C and%2C though Yuuno and Fate have a plan to deal with that even with Nanoha sidelined%2C we cut to commercial before we can find out how it goes.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhen we come back%2C we see... Hayate cooking dinner. %5E_%5E%3B Then she gets a phone call from Shamal%2C who%27s about to jump into the fight%2C among other things establishing that our blonde friend has a personality that%27s mildy reminiscent of manga-Belldandy%2C only with only about a quarter the sugar.%0D%0A%0D%0ASignum talks to Fate for a moment%2C establishing herself in the %27honorable opponent%27 niche%2C then lets slip something our girl finds rather interesting. I like the cartridge thing%2C BTW - it provides a logically consistent way to make the bad guys badass and a genuine threat%2C but %5Bi%5Ddoesn%27t%5B%2Fi%5D require denigrating or lessening the degree of special that Fate and Nanoha have been established as representing.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28Of course%2C it %5Bi%5Ddoes%5B%2Fi%5D present the problem of the way my subconcious is insisting on conflating the Valkyries%27 boosters with %22DURAN%21 Load silver cartridge%21%22 Which is damn cool in its own right%2C especially if she brought friends%2C but also %5Bi%5Dwierd%5B%2Fi%5D.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AI %5Bi%5Dalso%5B%2Fi%5D like the solution they came up with to resolve this first encounter - %2Acheers%2A Yeah%21 Go%2C Raging Heart%21 Even if your dialog was written by people who didn%27t actually speak English.%0D%0A%0D%0AHmm. Now that I think about it%2C the %5Bi%5Dpsychology%5B%2Fi%5D of these widgets is fairly interesting - they seem to have human-level capabilities w%2Fregards to initiative and reasoning potention%2C and certainly have the same kind of emotional bandwidth%2C but their apparent satisfaction with being%2C well%2C %5Bi%5Dtools%5B%2Fi%5D points to a very nonhuman mindset%2C much more so than Arf.%0D%0A%0D%0A...%5Bi%5Dwhoa%5B%2Fi%5D. They set up that kind of triumphant breakout - then Shamal stabs her in the back - literally. That%27s... kind of traumatic%2C but yet %5Bi%5Dso cool%5B%2Fi%5D at the same time. %28oh%2C and%2C what I said%2C comparing Shamal and Belldandy%3F For%5Bi%5Dget%5B%2Fi%5D it.%29%0D%0A%0D%0ASo%2C anyway %28I just realized what character she had been reminding me of that I couldn%27t place - she even %5Bi%5Ddresses%5B%2Fi%5D like Fuu%29%2C Shamal starts sucking out Nanoha%27s magic McGuffin widget - and Nanoha manages to fire off the attack %28needed to break open the barrier that%27s keeping Our Heroes from getting any reinforcements%29 %5Bi%5Danyway%5B%2Fi%5D. I%27m almost cheering out loud%2C if you%27re wondering.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd after that%2C it%27s pretty much over - Nanoha passes out %28small wonder%29%2C Chrono recognizes our villains and their Book%2C and from personal experience no less%28promising much-needed exposition next time around%2C as well as some unhoped-for tidbits about %5Bi%5Dhim%5B%2Fi%5D%29%2C and the Valkyries decide that they%27d better skedaddle before the cavalry shows up and rush Nano-chan to a hospital.%0D%0A%0D%0AJa%2C -n

Fortunately%2C though%2C everyone turns out fine.%0D%0A%0D%0AEven given their ages%2C Fate and Nanoha%27s reunion scene has me actually needing to expend effort to muffle my inner shoujo-ai fanboy. While she%27s a big hit%2C I%27m actually kind of startled by the difference the uncertain situation seems to make in her personality - I guess that until now I%27d seen her as one of those people who%27s so centered that they always seem in control of their situation%2C so seeing her reduced to a stuttering wallflower is a bit of a shock. It%27s actually even cuter than seeing Alicia take charge%2C though. %5E_%5E%0D%0A%0D%0AThen we get a short interval with a briefing from Chrono on the Necrono%5EH%5EH%5EH%5EH Book of Darkness before cutting back to the school scenes - this might%27ve been annoying%2C focusing on something so placid for most of the episode%2C but seeing how Fate handles Nanoha%27s life and friends is interesting enough in its own right that I%27d actually already been looking forwards to it%2C so overall it works.%0D%0A%0D%0ACommercial break%2C then a glance at Hayate%27s medical problems - which I%27m starting to suspect are both more serious than mere paralysis and rather central to the Knights%27 motivation - before Fate and Nanoha talk over the idea of trying to understand your enemies. Then Hayate and Suzuka bounce off each other again before we get treated to a time-lapse sequence of the Knights gathering magic while Nanoha recovers.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhich she does%2C and the Devices too%2C and just in time%2C as the TSAB catches up to Vita and Zafira. Of course%2C Chrono might be badass%2C but he and a crowd of redshirts aren%27t going to slow down the kind of opponent the Knights have been set up as on their own%2C which is why our newly recovered heroines get dropped onto the front line as backup. They transform%2C then... well%2C get their powerups. It%27s part of the meme%2C after all%2C and what makes this show cool is that it takes all the cliches and makes them all make %5Bi%5Dsense%5B%2Fi%5D.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhile their new sequences are neat and all%2C and I%27m especially thrilled by the way the two Devices are differentiated - I mean besides the different signet colors%2C it really comes across that Raging Heart is a tool with which to protect and Bardiche is a weapon with which to kick ass - the lolicon angle is so %5Bi%5Dway%5B%2Fi%5D overplayed. And yes%2C I know that the camera angles and such are standard too%2C but... brrr.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%27m also amused by the fact that %27Raging Heart Excelion%27 has a banana clip%2C of all things. %5E_%5E%0D%0A%0D%0AJa%2C -n

Even in the teaser we learn something interesting - that the Wolkenritter are involved in this whole Book project on their %5Bi%5Down%5B%2Fi%5D initiative%2C rather than%2C say having been summoned to help Hayate attain a goal of her own.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd they don%27t want her to know about it%3F Hm.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway%2C most of this episode is combat - the second encounter between our two opposing factions%2C playing out one-on-one. It%27s probably not very nice of me%2C but I%27m enjoying the chance to watch Vita realizing just %5Bi%5Dhow much%5B%2Fi%5D of a difference her equipment really made in that first encounter.
