Why the sudden %0D%0A%3Efascination with curling%3F I know why people back home love it%2C but why %0D%0A%3Ehas the US become curling-mad %28relatively speaking%29%3F %0D%0A%0D%0AIt started in 2002%2C actually%3B the Salt Lake bonspiel got such unexpectedly good TV ratings that NBC scheduled considerably more coverage for this year%27s.  The numbers are high this time%2C too%2C which is encouraging%3B maybe they%27ll actually start showing some non-Olympic curling on American TV occasionally%2C if the momentum can be kept up between Olympics this time.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs for why it%27s catching on%2C I dunno.  Here are a few reasons %5Bi%5DI%5B%2Fi%5D like it%3A%0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s unfamiliar.  It%27s interesting.  %28Like Fred Roggin said the other day%2C %22If you%27ve never seen curling before%2C you%27ll either be mesermized or so confused you keep watching anyway to try and figure out what%27s going on.%22%29  NBC%27s curling broadcast team %28Don Chevrier and Don Duguid%29 is excellent.  The US men%27s team is doing well.  The US women%27s team is... not%2C but they look good not doing it.  It%27s low-key and willfully non-XTREME%2C yet contains the potential for moments of great excitement.  It%27s a bit cerebral%2C but not impenetrable.  It%27s a sport practicable by regular Joes%2C unlike%2C say%2C bobsleigh.  As a spectator%2FTV sport it%27s kind of a cross between baseball %28it has a similar combination of laid-back%2C unhurried ambience and flashes of excitement%29 and bowling.%0D%0A%0D%0AI dunno%2C do you need more%3F  It%27s just fun to watch.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D. It always struck me as a very Canadian game %283-4%25 of Canadians are active curlers%2C something like 4%2F5ths of all curlers world wide%29 in that it lacks the aggressiveness that often characterizes US-ian sports. Canadians seem to focus all of their aggressiveness into hockey. %28Yes%2C I know about lacrosse%2C but it%27s not that popular despite it%27s official status%29%0D%0A%0D%0AIf you want to watch curling between Olympics...hmmm...is there %2Aany%2A way for you to get Canadian TV%3F You%27re really not that far from the border. There%27s a broadcast schedule at %5Blink%3Awww.curling.ca%2Ffan_central%2Fevents%2Fschedules_and_tv%2Ftelevision_schedule.asp%7Cthe curling.ca fan subsite%5D and if you could get CBC%2C TSN or The Score...%3F  On the other hand%2C if you could find your way to Lowell%2C Mass. in April you could watch the World Men%27s Championship live. That doesn%27t seem completely impossible. Given the proximity to the Olympics it might even get televised in the US.%0D%0A%0D%0A--john

I blame our Indian grad students.  %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0AThis caused problems for the kids who then went on to intramural softball%2C though. The curlers are much more enthusiastic about being in the Olympics than USA Hockey.  Lets bring back the college kids%2C the pros have no heart...

I like that I can plainly and obviously see that unlike 3%2F4 of the US athletes who seem to be out there for personal aggrandizement or because it %22looks good%22 %28Rot in Hell%2C Bode%29%2C the curlers are there because they%27re having FUN. In fact%2C just about every rink seems like they%27re as much at the games out of enjoyment and love of their sport as they are for love of their country%2C and that%27s fun to watch.%0D%0A%0D%0APlus%2C the awesome screaming matches between the skip and sweepers on every stone%2C and the fact that it%27s an olympic sport that I could believe I could actually compete at%2C unlike 90%25 of the events. %3AD%0D%0A%0D%0AIt also probably doesn%27t hurt that the commentating teams are really trying to explain things to give a nice connection and understanding to the audience%2C either%2C as opposed to making a mysterious dance of ice%2C stone%2C and broom.
