And to some degree there has been%2C in the 15 years since Watchmen%2C an awful lot of the comics field devoted to these very grim%2C pessimistic%2C nasty%2C violent stories which kind of use %5Bi%5DWatchmen%5B%2Fi%5D to validate what are%2C in effect%2C often just some very nasty stories that don%27t have a lot to recommend them.%22%0D%0A %22And some of them are very pretentious%2C where they%27ll try and grab some sort of intellectual gloss for what they%27re doing by referring to a few song titles%2C or the odd book. They%27ll name-drop William Burroughs here or there. Just like %5Bi%5DMAD%5B%2Fi%5D comics%2C which was a unique standalone thing%2C it%27s almost become a genre. The gritty%2C deconstructivist postmodern superhero comic%2C as exemplified by %5Bi%5DWatchmen%5B%2Fi%5D%2C also became a genre. It was never meant to. It was meant to be one work on its own.%22%0D%0A %22I think%2C to that degree%2C it may have had a deleterious effect upon the medium since then. I%27d have liked to have seen more people trying to do something that was as technically complex as %5Bi%5DWatchmen%5B%2Fi%5D%2C or as ambitious%2C but which wasn%27t strumming the same chords that %5Bi%5DWatchmen%5B%2Fi%5D had strummed so repetitively. This is not to say that the entire industry became like this%2C but at least a big enough chunk of it did that it is a noticeable thing.%22%0D%0A %22The apocalyptic bleakness of comics over the past 15 years sometimes seems odd to me%2C because it%27s like that was a bad mood that I was in 15 years ago. It was the 1980s%2C we%27d got this insane right-wing voter fear running the country%2C and I was in a bad mood%2C politically and socially and in most other ways. So that tended to reflect in my work. But it was a genuine bad mood%2C and it was mine. I tend to think that I%27ve seen a lot of things over the past 15 years that have been a bizarre echo of somebody else%27s bad mood. It%27s not even their bad mood%2C it%27s mine%2C but they%27re still working out the ramifications of me being a bit grumpy 15 years ago.%22%0D%0A%0D%0A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%0D%0A%28I broke it up into paragraphs for readability - this is actually one long comment.%29 1|1|0|||1||RE%3A Alan Moore on Watchmen...|Ardaniel||17:25:24|07/29/2006|%22I don%27t hate funny comics.
