OK%2C sure%2C directed by Sidney Lumet%2C who is something of a grand master at courtroom dramas - he directed %5Bi%5DTwelve Angry Men%5B%2Fi%5D and %5Bi%5DThe Verdict%5B%2Fi%5D%2C two on a list as long as your arm of great movies he%27s directed%2A - not a big surprise that it%27s a quality film.  The weird part%2C though%3F  Is that the lead character%2C Giacomo %22Jackie D%22 DiNorscio - a paunchy middle-aged member of the New Jersey branch of the Lucchese Mafia borgata - is played%2C and played %5Bi%5Dbrilliantly%5B%2Fi%5D%2C by... %0D%0A%0D%0A... Vin Diesel.%0D%0A%0D%0AYes%2C really.%0D%0A%0D%0ANow%2C it%27s no secret around the lab that I%27m a Vin Diesel fan%2C which is admittedly a little odd%2C since I haven%27t enjoyed most of his signature projects to date.  I have no particular love for the Riddick movies and I still think Zoner owes me money for making me watch %5Bi%5DThe Fast %26 the Furious%5B%2Fi%5D.  I enjoyed the hell out of %5Bi%5DxXx%5B%2Fi%5D and immortalized his character from that film as a Lensman%2C of all things%2C in UF%2C and that was pretty much it.  Worse%2C he keeps annoying me - and I%27m not alone in this - by climbing onto projects I have very little interest in and opting out of projects I%27d %5Bi%5Dlike%5B%2Fi%5D to see him in to make time for them.%0D%0A%0D%0AStill%2C I%27m a fan%2C but until now I would have conceded in a discussion that no%2C OK%2C I wouldn%27t really consider the guy an %5Bi%5Dactor%5B%2Fi%5D.  I%27ve never found that to be a great failing in action guys%2C not being an actor.  So what if he%27s basically playing himself as a secret agent in %5Bi%5DxXx%5B%2Fi%5D%2C the guy%27s got %5Bi%5Dcharm%5B%2Fi%5D.%0D%0A%0D%0ANow%3F%0D%0A%0D%0AHell yeah%2C he%27s an actor.  He played a fat guy twice his age.  With hair.  In a courtroom drama that had a grand total of one fight scene%2C in which he%27s hopelessly outclassed and loses miserably in seconds.  %5Bi%5DAnd he made it work.%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A%0D%0ABrilliant.  Even if he never does anything to approach the caliber of this performance again%2C he deserves to be recognized for his work on this film.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd yes%2C because I know you%27re wondering - that%27s really him%2C and he%27s really fat.  But I don%27t know if it%27s really his hair.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A%5Bsmall%5D%2A Yes%2C OK%2C Lumet also directed %5Bi%5DThe Wiz%5B%2Fi%5D%2C but come on.
