Especially when I%27m not feeling a need to edit myself for the sake of audience or accessibility.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway%2C as I%27ve already at least implied%2C my tastes in fiction are very catholic%2C but I don%27t place any particular value on a particular%2C er%2C brow-level%2C as it were.  %5Bi%5DHouse of Leaves%5B%2Fi%5D hovers on the border between esoterica for the sake of esoterica and esoterica for the sake of innovation%2C and while I%27m enjoying my journey through its weird%2C contorted%2C passageways%2C I don%27t think I%27ll be able to ever %5Bi%5Dlike%5B%2Fi%5D it in the same way that I like the Barsoom or Tarzan novels%2C or the first Symphony%2C or the Harry Potter books.  It requires a lot of the audience%2C and to bounce back to food metaphors%2C even if you have the capacity to appreciate the weirdness of molecular gastronomy%2C where they do things like gel%E9es and aspecs %28and can expound at length on the differences between these things%2C something invisible to a mere mortal like myself%2C who doesn%27t see the point of the entire venture to begin with%29%2C sometimes you just want a cheeseburger.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn the shelf above my head%2C I have several %5Bi%5DSailor Moon%5B%2Fi%5D DVDs%2C the BGC 2040 DVD set%2C Pulp Fiction%2C one of the LOTR movies%2C Family Guy%27s first DVD set%2C and the Clerks cartoon%2C among others.  I don%27t think any of these are any more or less valid than another.  On my hard drive I%27ve got a bunch of %5Bi%5DKamen Rider Kabuto%5B%2Fi%5D fansubs that I watch when I can set aside a spare twenty minutes or so per episode.%0D%0A%0D%0AYes%2C there%27s objective things you can measure%2C like production quality%2C acting and direction ability%2C quality of the dialogue%2C etc.  But what makes it work or not work is just how good of a story it is.  The rest is largely irrelevant.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5DLost in Translation%5B%2Fi%5D has excellent performances%2C witty dialogue%2C amusing scenes%2C and is an utterly pointless movie%2C because there%27s never a reason given to care about what happens in it.  %28At this point%2C Sophia Coppola has established that it%27s about all we can expect of her films. Well%2C at least she%27s easy on the eyes.%29  It was made to make movie critics cream their shorts. With that recommendation%2C perhaps I%27ll go see it this weekend%3B I generally wait for the DVD%27s these days but for something like this I%27ll make an exception.  My own favorite Bond is %5Bi%5DFrom Russia with Love%5B%2Fi%5D%3B I find it reasonably close to the book %28also my favorite of Fleming%27s novels%2C though I still think it was a helluva trick for him to write his way out of the ending he set up at the end of the book - if memory serves%2C he had originally intended it to be the last book in the series%29%2C closer than most of the other movies%2C and for my own money it still has the best Bond girl%2C Tatiana Romanova %28Daniela Bianchi%29. I liked %5Bi%5DThe Spy Who Loved Me%5B%2Fi%5D %28not that that had ANYTHING to do with the book%29 and %5Bi%5DOctopussy%5B%2Fi%5D %28ditto%29%2C but I think Moore adumbrated Schwarzenegger in his continual stream of bad puns whenever he dispatched some villain or another.  Dalton tried to do cold and brutal but couldn%27t quite pull it off IMO%2C and Brosnan was%2C to my way of thinking%2C overly smooth and polished. Never watched %5Bi%5DOn Her Majesty%27s Secret Service%5B%2Fi%5D all the way through so I can%27t really comment on Lazenby. Why not%3F%22%29%0D%0A%0D%0A%3EOn the non-fantasy front%2C I%27ve recently read %5Bi%5DHalo%3A Ghosts of %0D%0A%3EOnyx%5B%2Fi%5D %28not as good as %5Bi%5DThe Fall of Reach%5B%2Fi%5D%29 and an odd little %0D%0A%3Ebook by one Tom De Haven called %5Bi%5DIt%27s Superman%21%5B%2Fi%5D  The latter is a %0D%0A%3Eprose retelling of Superman%27s origin story as a period piece %28that is%2C %0D%0A%3Eit%27s set in the 1930s%29%2C and is rather strange%2C but an entertaining %0D%0A%3Eread. %0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s tough to top %5Bi%5DThe Fall of Reach%5B%2Fi%5D%2C because inherently everything else gets stuck in the quicksand bog of %27is it canon%3F Does it contradict the games%3F%27 problems%2C whereas %5Bi%5DFall%5B%2Fi%5D is an excellent companion to the games%27 story because%2C quite simply%2C it%27s a prequel%28and excellently written to boot%29. Though %5Bi%5DGhosts%5B%2Fi%5D has the benefit of making the entire concept of a multiple galaxy spanning%2C organic life targeting doomsday device seem to make a lot more sense than even the GAMES have managed to%28Flood assimilates everyone or....we kill everyone%2C including ourselves. This plan has a certain %5Bi%5Dflaw%5B%2Fi%5D that I just can%27t pin down%29. Personally%2C my main appreciation was seeing that they gave the authorship back to Nylund. %5Bi%5DThe Flood%5B%2Fi%5D had some...less than sterling writing in some parts%2C comparatively%2C and was somewhat jarring because of it.

I have failed to watch the entire run of series I%27ve been much keener on than BGC2040%2C come to that.  I have the whole first series of %5Bi%5DFull Metal Panic%5B%2Fi%5D and I%27ve never made it past disc 2%2C and %5Bi%5DI like the show%5B%2Fi%5D.  I just haven%27t gotten around to it.  I%27m just weird that way.  Sometimes I don%27t even watch complete movies in a single sitting.  I%27ll watch the first hour or so%2C then put it away and maybe get back to the rest of it in a day or two%2C or more.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis peculiarity of my character drives Zoner crazy%2C because his psyche is equally defective in the opposite direction.  He%27s the type who can%27t rest until he%27s watched the whole thing%2C then watched it again with the commentary track on%2C then watched all the DVD extras%2C then gone back through it once more spamming the Alternate Angle button %5Bi%5Djust in case%5B%2Fi%5D.  I still haven%27t entirely forgiven him for making me watch %5Bi%5Dpi%5B%2Fi%5D %28possibly the worst movie I have ever seen all the way through%2C by the way%29 twice in a single sitting.
