We have Disney to thank for this%2C due to the way the American entertainment industry dominates the rest of the world %28and the unreciprocal nature of this relationship%29%2C and the nature of the animation industry in America%3A it%27s pretty much Disney -- and they%27re the kid-Safest company around -- and whatever Warner Bros. and Fox can churn out%3B at one point%2C Warner Bros%27 cartoons were oriented towards adults%2C but that was back in the 40s and 50s%2C when they were animated comedic shorts airing in front of movies.  Even Bugs Bunny has been politically corrected%3B American animation is almost exclusively targeted at kids%2C the exception being the Cartoon Network%27s occasional forays into more mature stuff %28%5Bi%5DSamurai Jack%5B%2Fi%5D%29 or stuff that%27s meaty enough for adults but also followable for kids %28%5Bi%5DBatman%5B%2Fi%5D%2C %5Bi%5DSuperman%5B%2Fi%5D%2C %5Bi%5DJustice League%5B%2Fi%5D%2C pre-season 3 %5Bi%5DGargoyles%5B%2Fi%5D%29.%0D%0A%0D%0Ab%29 This means that for something animated to be commercially viable in the States%2C it has to be kid-friendly.  So they look at simple stuff that they can market%2C like %5Bi%5DBishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon%5B%2Fi%5D %28which was utterly shredded by that godawful dub... %2Ashudders%2A%2C and which was demographically a failure because 6 - 12 year old girls didn%27t immediately start snapping up those utterly horrific toys%29%2C %5Bi%5DDragonBall Z%5B%2Fi%5D %28which is my 7-year-old nephew%27s favorite show... he owns more DBZ merchandise than I own Transformers... yeesh%29.  The only stuff that%27s going to be aired is something Cartoon Network doesn%27t have to pony up the cash to do the dub for %28which wouldn%27t be the case with%2C say%2C %5Bi%5DNadesico%5B%2Fi%5D or %5Bi%5DSakura Wars%5B%2Fi%5D%2C but %5Bi%5DSlayers%5B%2Fi%5D would probably have to be redubbed or heavily edited -- it%27s PG-13%2C and they%27re aiming for a middling PG at the most%29.  %5Bi%5DGundam Wing%5B%2Fi%5D they took a risk on%2C and it paid off%3B it wasn%27t %5Bi%5Dmuch%5B%2Fi%5D of a risk%2C given the popularity of %5Bi%5DGundam%5B%2Fi%5D here%2C and the genre %28action%2C big explosions%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AFact is%2C something like %5Bi%5DNadesico%5B%2Fi%5D wouldn%27t be picked up Cartoon Network%2C because they could run %5Bi%5DDragonBall GT%5B%2Fi%5D instead and make a lot more money -- %5Bi%5DDragonBall%5B%2Fi%5D is a proven brand%2C with lots of merchandising opportunities%2C and advertisers will be falling all over themselves to get commercials on during the show%2C especially during the initial run of each new episode.%0D%0A%0D%0AThat %5Bi%5DBig O%5B%2Fi%5D got run by Cartoon Network was a surprise for me%3B %5Bi%5DCowboy Bebop%5B%2Fi%5D wasn%27t%3B by the time they ran it%2C it was already a success on DVD.
