The Peculiar Crimes Unit solves the really%2C really weird stuff. Dancers found with their feet cut off and a man splattered by a giant globe - in 1940. A man in a beard hurling acid over a Waterhouse and blowing up on a train - in 1973. A modern artist drowned in her own exhibition and the only witness says it was a man on a horse - in 2007. Anderson%2C USN %28with Don Keith%29%0D%0A%0D%0AIn 1959%2C Captain Anderson and a reporter he knew%2C Clay Blair%2C Jr.%2C co-wrote a book entitled %5Bi%5DNautilus 90 North%5B%2Fi%5D%2C which was a condensed recounting of Operation Sunshine %28the nuclear submarine USS %5Bi%5DNautilus%5B%2Fi%5D%27s mission to reach the North Pole under the ice%29 aimed at the junior high school set. I read it years ago in my own middle school%27s library. He%27s a bit more like Hornblower than his %22contemporaries%22 Ramage and Aubrey%2C in that he%27s a bit more introspective%2C and spends a good bit of his time being scared shitless and getting the job done anyway%2C then reproaching himself for having been scared. This series runs to a truly daunting %5Bi%5D29 volumes%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and%2C like the Hornblower canon%2C were published out of story order. The Bolitho series has the interesting distinction of being the only one of the four that could still be going on%2C since Reeman is still alive %28as of this writing%3B I mean%2C he %5Bi%5Dis%5B%2Fi%5D 84 years old%29.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5DThe Terror%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A - Dan Simmons%0D%0A%0D%0AI started this book a month or so ago and had to put it aside. Not because it%27s bad - it%27s not - but because it%27s so intense I decided I%27d have to wait until I wasn%27t working on three or four other books at the same time and give it my full attention. It%27s a novel that fictionalizes the doomed Franklin expedition of 1845%2C in which two Royal Navy steamships%2C HMS %5Bi%5DTerror%5B%2Fi%5D and HMS %5Bi%5DErebus%5B%2Fi%5D%2C went in search of the Northwest Passage through the ice of northern Canada and%2C as so many others had before them%2C never returned. The thing that makes %5Bi%5DThe Terror%5B%2Fi%5D so intense%3A It postulates that%2C in addition to the brutal cold%2C the dwindling provisions%2C the possibility of madness and mutiny among the trapped and desperate sailors%2C and all the other %5Bi%5Dreal-life%5B%2Fi%5D horrors that %28over the course of a couple of %5Bi%5Dyears%5B%2Fi%5D icebound in the middle of nowhere%29 took the lives of all the expedition%27s 129 men... there was also some unfathomable monster stalking them. It%27s like Patrick O%27Brian and H.P. A bit of setup%3A the hero and the small force he%27s leading are in some uber-expensive but exceedingly durable suits %28though the enemy has weapons that CAN take them out%29. In order to suppress a mass breakthrough at the Rabun Gap%2C they%27ve just detonated an antimatter cluster munition over the area. The suits are dug in just before impact%2C so they%27re scuffed but okay as they%27re built to take this kind of thing as long as it%27s not a direct hit.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5DAs far as the eye could see%2C and from the edge of the mountain that was a fair distance%2C there was nothing but scrubbed dirt. His escape pod is found a century later and he%27s awakened from stasis only to find himself the seniormost surviving oficer in a fleet that was %5Bi%5Dsupposed%5B%2Fi%5D to be backstabbing the enemy%27s home system... except that it was%2C of course%2C a trap.
