I love the stuff with Newt%27s family and the colony before the aliens hit%2C but it doesn%27t feel missed in the theatrical cut.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn the case of %5Bi%5DThe Abyss%5B%2Fi%5D%2C it makes for a rather pat and head-scratching ending.  Now%2C what saved that theatrical cut was that nothing was lost of building the ensemble cast%2C and you still had the thoroughly awesome crew of Deepcore doing what they do.  Still%2C I%27ll never watch the theatrical cut again now that I%27ve got access to the SE%2C because it completes the film. %28I %2Arented a laserdisc player%2A and dubbed the SE to VHS back in %2792 just so I could have a copy of the SE%2C since it would be a long time before it was available on a format I owned.%29%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5DAvatar%5B%2Fi%5D has this same problem%2C only in this case much of the subplot %2Awas%2A character building.  I eagerly away the blu-ray release on the chance that it will include cut footage%2C though early reports say there will only be about 10 minutes or so.  I would love to see the %7E4 hour rough cut of the film he had earlier in the year%2C but I don%27t think we%27ll see that much for various reasons.  I%27m not going to offer it here%2C so please don%27t ask %28and please do not link it here if you find it%29%2C but intrepid internet spelunkers ought to be able to come across Cameron%27s original scriptment for %5Bi%5DAvatar%5B%2Fi%5D.  I would have much rather seen that version than the one we got%2C though I think I know why he changed part of it%2C as some bits could be used in future films.  And sequels are most definitely on the agenda now.%0D%0A%0D%0AAll that being said%2C %5Bi%5DAvatar%5B%2Fi%5D is a %2Astunning%2A technical achievement.
