0|0|0|||||Stargate Universe question|CGWolfgang||18:39:19|10/02/2011|Just a quick question to all here that have seen%2C or are fans of%2C the various stargate series.  I%27ve recently devoured all of SG-1 and Atlantis and am sorry I missed them when they aired instead of watching them all after the fact.  I recently started on Universe and well after the first four episodes I%27m -bored- of it.%0D%0A%0D%0AI know its meant to be way different than the other series in the franchise which I don%27t mind too much.  I loved the Battlestar reboot just as much as I loved watching the reruns of the original so it being darker and more serious doesn%27t bother me.%0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s just so boring to watch.  Its almost feels like I%27m watching Survivor%3A Stargate.%0D%0A%0D%0ABut my question to the boards is should I stick with it%3F  For those who%27ve seen it please let me know.

I was intrigued as to where they were going with it%2C but at the same time found it dreadfully boring.  It was one of those situations where they tried too hard to make every character %22flawed%2C%22 to the point where you couldn%27t really find yourself liking any of them.  %0D%0A%0D%0APersonally%2C I%27d say that if you%27re bored of it after four episodes%2C then there%27s no reason to stick with it.  Especially not when the series got canceled on a cliffhanger%2C with the movie meant to tie things up itself canceled.

I found it grim%2C with little humor and a %27meh%27 attatude. While the other two SG series were rousing%2C exciting%2C with humor%2C SG%3AU had none of those.%0D%0A%0D%0AThey were trying to recreate the newer BSG series and %5Bi%5Dit didn%27t work.%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A%0D%0ACraig

I like action thrillers but with the last two series being light hearted action adventures I think I%27ll just call it quits.

I could empathize with the Voyager characters.  They weren%27t so dysfunctional or warped or just pathetic%2C like most of the SGU characters.  And there was less creepy%2C unexplained semi-mysticism in ST%3AV relative to SGU.  Too many episodes of SGU spent too much time in the %22mystic%22 visions of Scott and others.  YMMV%2C of course.

Ship Life was more believable in that show and had a sense of familiarity that I could relate to from personal experiences.  And the icing on the cake was that they had Enlistedmen doing typical %22E%22- type jobs and doing them competently instead of making anyone who does something even remotely important an Officer.  In most other Sci-Fi shows Elisted are degreulated to He-who-shall-not-operate-anything-other-than-a-lightswitch-lest-they-forget-how-to-breathe red shirt status. So it was nice to see the powers that be change it up a little.%0D%0A%0D%0A

The second season is stronger%2C and has some quite standout episodes%3B by the end%2C I was sorry to see the series go.
10|2|5|||||RE%3A Stargate Universe question|Croaker||15:02:41|12/09/2011|I dunno%2C I kinda liked the coda songs%2C I thought they were a very nice storytelling motif that emphasized what the series was trying to be all about%3A that even amidst the weird%2C %5Bi%5Dlife goes on%5B%2Fi%5D. People still do the things they do%2C still live%2C eat%2C play%2C love... %0D%0A%0D%0ABut that itself was really the downfall of the series. Even BSG had a real enemy to hang a plot arc on%2C even if it%27s %22how are we going to stay human in the face of the cylon threat%22. Other SG series had %22how are we plucky humans going to beat the goa%27uld%2Fwraith%2Fori%2Fwhatever%22. There was no consistency to the enemies in SGU%2C they were just unnamed%2C unknown%2C unspeaking strawmen set up for the characters to struggle against so we could see them have their soap-opera. And that just doesn%27t hold the attention of the sci-fi fan unless the soap-opera is done %5Bi%5Dreally frakking well%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and it %5Bi%5Dwasn%27t%5B%2Fi%5D.
