I looked out the patio door and what do I see but a pair of bucks locking antlers in our back yard.  They spent the next 2-3 minutes fighting in the yard %28which was already covered with cut-up pine tree from the power company trimming a tree that fell just over our power lines%29 before one of them backed down and they both left.  And while the smell was gone in the morning%2C just sticking my head out to look for obvious damage was enough to tell that last night it reeked of deer scent...%0D%0A%0D%0ALooking this morning when it was light out%2C there was only one spot of obvious damage.  They apparently had crashed into the house %28brick construction thankfully%29 %5Bi%5Djust%5B%2Fi%5D next to the glass door%2C as the plastic junction box for the cable company %28which we thankfully don%27t use%29 located there was partially %5Bi%5Dshattered%5B%2Fi%5D with bits of it lying all around the patio.  Fortunately that was the only damage to the house%2C but it was quite the shock when it happened. That said%2C what has to be the strangest thing I%27ve heard of is when%2C out of nowhere%2C a huge buck comes charging out at a rapidly moving vehicle%2C knocking itself silly on the door and causing a not insignificant amount of damage to the vehicle.%0D%0A%0D%0ABad part is%2C nine times out of ten%3F  The victim trusses the buck up and takes it home%2C where it becomes... well%2C dinner.  Fried tenderloin steak is a local favorite.  I wish I could still eat it%3B gout%2C unfortunately%2C has put a stop to my venison consuming days.%0D%0A%0D%0AEdited to add%3A  This happens with alarming regularity.  It%27s almost as if they%27re learning to fight back%2C or being trained.  I dread the day when one bursts through its skin to show blue metal beneath...

Neat thing about that was the occasional baby would pull a wack a mole and pop up nearby trying to look at the fleshy things inside the boat.  The scariest was all we saw of the bull was over six feet of dorsal fin that was uncomfortably close.

I was working as a swim coach and life guard for the municipal government in Lincoln%2C and didn%27t hear the following story till we moved down to Manhattan Kansas and my wife and I went through the docent training at the Sunset Zoological Park.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe storms that summer that peaked with %28then%29 record flooding from Omaha to Kansas City were horrendous.  For context%2C the enclosure at the zoo for the red pandas is open on top%2C for the very simple reason that red pandas can jump about as well as a concrete block with lead weights.  The last storm dropped a microburst on Manhattan%2C knocking trees all over town all kinds of catiwampus%2C including one of the climbing limbs in the panda%27s enclosure.  The limb was knocked over far enough that the top of the limb extended out over enclosure into the surrounding trees.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs you might guess%2C when the clean-up began the next day%2C Mr. Panda had gone walk-about.  The zoo sits on a hill%2C with woods extending from the zoo all the way down to the next urbanized area on the west and south faces%3B the panda%27s enclosure was just over the west-facing down slope woods.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe zoo called in all hands%2C brought in vet students and wildlife management students from Kansas State University and spent 2 day%27s combing that hillside.  Nothing.  Day three broke with the zoo personnel having decided Mr. Panda had ended up bobcat food %28a couple of which live in the woods around the zoo%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe phone rang into the zoo just after lunch on that day 3.  The person calling was a very polite British ex-patriot who had been lecturing at K-State on international diplomacy.  The gentleman%27s home was a good 2 miles southwest from the zoo%2C with 4 lane highways separating his housing development from the zoo.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhat follows is a fairly close quote from what the gentleman said.  %22Yes%2C hello.
