Good grief%2C I forget how long I%27ve been doing this until I write the date down.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn my time at Highland%2C I%27ve taught everything from A%26P to Child Developmental Psych.  My Child Dev and Abbie Normal psych classes for this Fall semester got cancelled due to lack of enrollment.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis state of affairs worked out for the site director however as she had two of her biology instructors up and quit 2 weeks before classes start%3B she promptly begged me to take the evening section.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo here I sit%2C rewriting my lecture notes for Introductory College Biology %28%26 lab%29%2C as I haven%27t covered a bio section since 2009.  I was going through my old evaluations%2C checking the written comments for any valid complaints%2Fsuggestions and came across the administrative response to a student who had submitted a complaint about my teaching of said Spring 2009 college biology class%3B said student had complained about my emphasis on evolutionary theory throughout the course.%0D%0A%0D%0ATo paraphrase the administration%27s response%3A  It%27s a biology course.  It is TAUGHT from the standpoint of evolutionary theory.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn a vaguely related note%2C that same year I gave a seminar to a group of real estate agents in Hutchison KS on residential radiation exposures and the real estate industry.  On the evaluation form%2C one of the attendees wrote%2C and I quote%3A %22This class is a bunch of shit.  I bet you believe in evolution%2C too.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AAh%2C the joys of being an educator in the U.S..%0D%0A%0D%0ABrian%0D%0A

It%27s a Gigantic State University%2C so naturally the students are all over the map politics-wise%2C and it%27s in San Diego County%2C which has unusually%2C er%2C %5Bi%5Dpolarized%5B%2Fi%5D demographics%2C so I was expecting this to come up at least once.  I used to try to head it off by starting the first lecture of each quarter with remarks to the effect that this class takes evolution as an accepted principle%2C and if you have a problem with that%2C I will be happy to discuss it%2C but ONLY in my office hours%3B we%27re not going to waste class time on it.%0D%0A%0D%0ANo one ever took me up on that.%0D%0A
