If you are not familiar with the Extension concept%2C think of it as primarily a county level interface between a state%27s academic institution%28s%29 and the residents of the state%2C usually targeted at the production side of the agricultural sector. I do indoor air quality technical assistance for the EPA targeted at both Kansas and the nation at large.%0D%0A%0D%0AMy %27job%27 recently opened up with the Minnesota Department of Health%2C when one of their two folks that do for Minnesota what I do for Kansas jumped ship for the state%27s IT department. On a whim%2C and because it literally only cost 10 minutes to do so%2C I put my name in the hat.%0D%0A%0D%0AMost people would assume I did this for career advancement%2C and they%27d be partially correct. I adore my current position%2C with the possible exception of now knowing what my salary probably should look like. I have an academic position that comes with an office with a door. A door%21 Moving up to Minn-e-so-ta would mean moving into cubicle land%2C which is a servicable definition of Hell as far as I%27m concerned.%0D%0A%0D%0AMy wife on the the other hand%2C while employed as the veterinarian she%27s trained and licensed as%2C is not particularly happy with her current lot. So St Paul seemed to me like a possible reasonable move to up her employment choices. I have most of my family in Minnesota%2C we both have friends in Minneapolis%2C I have old gaming contacts up there as well. What the heck.%0D%0A%0D%0AI get the call that I%27m on the interview list%2C and they need a list of professional references. My references are my current employers%2C and my boss being who he is%2C figured if nothing else it would be good for me as I%27ve not been through the process since he hired me in 2002. I interviewed a week ago last Tuesday. The supervisor for the position broke all know bureaucratic HR speed records and offered me the position AT the salary I specified I%27d need to accept the job that Friday.%0D%0A%0D%0ACrap. Now we have to make a decision. We%27d have to try to buy a house up there while selling the house here. My wife would have to job hunt remotely while we prepped to move. Would my benefits from Minnesota be at least as good as mine are from Kansas%3F For the record%2C everything I turned up indicates that Minnesota actually doesn%27t see its state employees as parasites on the system. Seems like a pretty decent place to hang till retirement.%0D%0A%0D%0AIt was a long weekend%2C to say the least.%0D%0A%0D%0AThankfully%2C the Law of Unintended Consequences stepped in. The owner of a sole proprietor veterinary clinic in Topeka got wind of the job offer and made my wife a job offer. The offer wasn%27t completely out of the blue as they%27d been discussing the possibility for a while now%2C but the offer to me convinced the owner to come down off the fence about my wife.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo%2C everyone but the State of Minnesota%2C who will now be denied my esteemed services%2C came out of this relatively happy. I don%27t have to try to move our household to St Paul in February. My wife will be transferring into a more suitable position in late Winter. My boss is happy he doesn%27t have to navigate Kansas%27 hiring rules%2C which form another servicable definition of Hell. The only Bah part is I couldn%27t go back to my boss and say %22you know%2C if you could slip me a little something%2C I%27d happily hang around%22%3A One%2C we don%27t have the budget flexibility to swing it%2C and two%2C he knows I%27d happily hang around anyway.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo what was the point of writing this out%3F I%27m not sure. But I was blindsided by just how much stress being OFFERED a job could create. I was a wreck this week until I was able to decline yesterday. But it was also a nice bit of ego boost to know that someone besides my current employer felt I%27d be a nice addition to his department. 1|1|0|||||RE%3A When an Employment Offer Becomes Ridiculously Stres|BeardedFerret||06:46:17|12/15/2013|I totally hear you on the stress of getting an offer%2C particularly when it involves a move. I moved from Hobart to Canberra in Australia just over two years ago%2C and the weeks leading up to the move were so stressful that I wasn%27t able to sleep for a few nights. %0D%0A%0D%0AHaving since learned that Canberra is nice%2C in a capital city you don%27t have to live in kind of way%2C I%27m now trying to plan another move for perhaps this time next year. 2|1|0|||||RE%3A When an Employment Offer Becomes Ridiculously Stres|drakensis||08:23:24|12/17/2013|Well%2C at least the pressure of moving is off you.%0D%0A%0D%0AI mean - I had an _easy_ move%2C over the course of six weeks moving only a couple of miles%2C and it%27s still been driving me battier than usual. At least now it%27s mostly just unpacking to deal with... 3|2|2|||1||RE%3A When an Employment Offer Becomes Ridiculously Stres|Offsides||08:42:43|12/17/2013|I moved 4.5 times over the course of just over 3 years. And in my experience%2C the shorter the move%2C the harder it is. Partially because you %5Bi%5Dcan%5B%2Fi%5D just go back for things if you forget them%2C so you%27re a lot laxer about getting it all packed in one shot...%0D%0A%0D%0AI don%27t know if it%27ll happen or not%2C but I told my wife after the last move that the next time I move %5Bi%5DI%27ll%5B%2Fi%5D be the one in the box...%0D%0A%0D%0AOffsides%0D%0A%0D%0A%26%2391%3B...%26%2393%3B in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles.%0D%0A -- David Ben Gurion%0D%0AEPU RCW %23%26pi%3B%0D%0A%23include %3Cstdsig.h%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A 4|1|0|||||RE%3A When an Employment Offer Becomes Ridiculously Stres|MuninsFire||12:53:56|12/17/2013|I can definitely understand the sentiment. On one side%2C the stroke to the ego %28somebody wants me%21 Somebody needs my help%21%29 is marvelous%2C but on the other side there%27s a lot of disruption.%0D%0A%0D%0AHad something like that recently--a job came up at the same company that I work for now which would be a change in track %28sysadmin to secadmin%29 which is more compatible for my long-term plans%2C but wouldn%27t pay as well.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn the end%2C I ended up deciding that a lateral move wasn%27t in the cards this time%2C but it was a couple of sleepless-er than usual nights before that resolved.
