0|0|0|||1||tested.com|Gryphon||21:07:50|01/24/2014|So I%27m sure I%27m the last person in the %27hood to notice this%2C but %28after glancing past mentions of doings concerning it for ages in Adam Savage%27s tweets%29 I finally made my way to tested.com the other day%2C and%2C well%2C gosh.%0D%0A%0D%0AComing to it so late is kind of a strange experience%2C because it was obviously a well-established tech-nerdery site %5Bi%5Dbefore%5B%2Fi%5D Adam %28and Jamie Hyneman%2C albeit he strikes me as a rather more reluctant contributor somehow%29 started participating in it%2C and one rather gets the impression that they sort of %5Bi%5Dconquered%5B%2Fi%5D it a couple of years ago%2C possibly with the help of a pile of Discovery Channel%27s money being dumped on the site%27s parent company.  The comment streams on the early %5Bi%5DMythbusters%5B%2Fi%5D-related content have a certain %22hey%2C wait%2C what is this%2C no fair%22 flavor about them.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28In fairness%2C the guys who ran the site before they came along%2C Will and Norm%2C A%29 are still there%2C B%29 seem thrilled to have them as collaborators%2C and C%29 don%27t really appear to be good enough actors%2Fliars to be faking B.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway.  I say %22%5Bi%5DMythbusters%5B%2Fi%5D-related content%22%2C but it%27s really more %22Mythbusters-related content%22%2C if you take my meaning.  Jamie appears only sporadically and doesn%27t quite seem to know what to make of it - one rather gets the impression that he%27s slightly grudgingly humoring someone %28but then again%2C one rather gets that impression from Jamie a %5Bi%5Dlot%5B%2Fi%5D of the time%29.  Adam%2C on the other hand%2C is as active there as his peripatetic lifestyle allows%2C and indeed occasionally gives the impression of ever-so-slightly overextending himself.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhat he does on the site isn%27t about the show itself%2C though%2C so much as what he does for the six or seven minutes a week%2A when he%27s not working on the show - hacking stuff%2C collecting weird things%2C going to Comic-Con%2C knowing cool people.  %28One of the videos on the site is a %5Bi%5Dbangin%27%5B%2Fi%5D one-hour conversation with John Landis%2C director of %5Bi%5DThe Blues Brothers%5B%2Fi%5D%2C %5Bi%5DAnimal House%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and other classic comedies%2C and guest-starring Adam%27s adorable dogs%2C Huxley and Maggie.%29%0D%0A%0D%0ATo give you a flavor%2C here%27s %5Blink%3Awww.tested.com%2Fart%2Fmakers%2F459858-one-day-builds-adam-savages-traveling-beaver-box%2F%7Cthe latest in the %22Adam%27s One-Day Builds%22 semi-series%5D%2C released Wednesday%2C in which Adam builds a carrying case for a piece of taxidermy %28no%2C really%29 and Will Smith %28not that Will Smith%29 makes puns about the kind of animal it is until he actually can%27t stand himself any more. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0AI%27ve only just started exploring the rest of the site%2C beyond the %22inside Adam%27s shop%22 videos%2C but like I say%2C it appears to have been a pretty standard %22we test the new FrammiPhone 9000%22-type site that than went %5Bi%5Dberserk%5B%2Fi%5D expanding into the whole art-technology intersection%2Fmaker culture thing.  They still DO the %22we were at CES and we saw this cool new widget%22 articles%2C but the overall %5Bi%5DWeltanschauung%5B%2Fi%5D of the thing is much more eclectic and weird than that.%0D%0A%0D%0AAlso%2C in %5Blink%3Awww.tested.com%2Fart%2Fmakers%2F44779-inside-adam-savages-man-cave-metal-lathe-with-digital-readout%2F%7Cone of the older %22Adam%27s shop%22 videos%5D%2C it is revealed that Adam owns the exact make and model of engine lathe we have three of in the Mechanical Engineering Technology department%27s Machine Tool Lab at the University of Maine %28where my workstudy gig is%29. But aside from that%21  Lots of fascinating insights into the lives of a couple of seriously interesting dudes.  %28Norm doesn%27t talk much%2C so there aren%27t enough insights into his life for me to be able to tell%3B it is entirely possible that he is %5Bi%5Dalso%5B%2Fi%5D a seriously interesting dude.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AOne of the many highlights for me so far was the one where they were talking about video games%2C and Adam said he prefers exploring the worlds to combat%2C and will%2C whenever possible%2C cheat to avoid the tiresome business of dying all the time so he can just wander around%2C see things%2C and move along the game%27s storyline if it has one.  And I%27m over here talking to my iPod%2C like he can hear me through it%2C going%2C %22Yes%21  Exactly%21  That%27s exactly the thing%21%22  Because I have %5Bi%5Dso%5B%2Fi%5D done that with every %5Bi%5DElder Scrolls%5B%2Fi%5D game I%27ve played%2A%2C among rather a lot of others.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A%5Bsmall%5D%2A OK%2C admittedly that%27s only the most recent two. For extra fun%2C %5Blink%3Awww.tested.com%2Fprint-the-mystery-object%2F%3F%26p%3D6%7Cstart with the oldest ones%5D%3B they%27ve been doing this for nigh-on four years now%2C with four different generations of MakerBot printer%2C and it%27s fascinating to see how far that technology has come in such a short time.
