It was important for Roddenberry %28and important in general%3B at one point%2C Martin Luther King personally talked Nichelle Nichols into not quitting because her being seen on TV every week was %5Bi%5Dthat%5B%2Fi%5D important%29 to show a future where nobody would keep you down because of the color of your skin and where different nation-states were now longer at each others throats%2C but the flip side of that was everyone was basically culturally %5Bi%5Dvery%5B%2Fi%5D white bread. Sulu and Uhura didn%27t even have first names%2C and the extent of Chekov%27s Russian-ness was him cracking wise about everything having been invented there.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28Admittedly%2C he was far from alone in that. Uhura%2C and they%27re all highly trained%2C well-regarded professionals.  They weren%27t series regulars%2C which may be why the producers got away with it%2C but Commodore Stone was a Starfleet flag officer%3B Dr. M%27benga a physician shown treating white folks without comment%3B and Richard Daystrom%2C for all that he was a rather tragic figure in that episode%2C was nonetheless a Nobel laureate and a widely admired man.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D.
