The second one%2C %5Bi%5DDeus Ex%3A Invisible War%5B%2Fi%5D%2C was... not. But they both shared an essential design feature%2C and it%27s made me extremely reluctant to invest a bunch of time and energy in the third one%2C %5Bi%5DDeus Ex%3A Human Revolution%5B%2Fi%5D. And that essential feature is%3A %5Bi%5DAll of the endings suck.%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s a bit ironic%2C when you consider how much press %5Bi%5DDeus Ex%5B%2Fi%5D got back in the day for its %22groundbreaking multithreaded narrative%22%2C that all of those revolutionary multiple story threads led to endings that made you feel like a chump for caring about the choices you were making in the game all along. And then %5Bi%5DInvisible War%5B%2Fi%5D came along and did the %5Bi%5Dsame goddamned thing%5B%2Fi%5D%2C which was even worse%2C since you%27d been sitting there enduring the crappy environmental design%2C the lame weapons%2C and the pre-Cambrian load times thinking%2C %5Bi%5DWell%2C at least the story%27s engaging.%5B%2Fi%5D When I finally realized%2C after playing through the major decision points four or five times and exhausting all the available endings only to find that they were all horrible%2C that they%27d done it to me %5Bi%5Dagain%5B%2Fi%5D%2C I nearly threw my mouse through a window.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo I%27ve been intrigued by the art design of %5Bi%5DHuman Revolution%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and I must have bought it on one of those periodic insane-unannounced Steam sales or something%2C because it%27s been sitting in my library for quite a while now and I haven%27t ever actually been arsed to play it. I don%27t feel like investing all the time and energy it takes to play through a game of that kind again%2C only to discover that my choice of endings once again boils down to %22destroy all humanity%2C%22 %22revert civilization to barbarism%2C%22 or %22destroy all humanity in a different way.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AHere%27s the hard part. If anyone out there has played %5Bi%5DHuman Revolution%5B%2Fi%5D%2C will you please tell me - %5Bi%5Dwithout spoiling any details%5B%2Fi%5D - whether this is once more the case%3F Is there an ending - even %5Bi%5Done%5B%2Fi%5D will do - that doesn%27t roundly mock the player for bothering to get far enough to see it%3F Because there wasn%27t in either of the first two games and I%27m not doin%27 that again.%0D%0A%0D%0AI realize%2C of course%2C that I%27m setting myself up for a long con here if anyone cares to pull it. If there isn%27t%2C and you tell me there is%2C I have no way of knowing you%27re lying until I%27ve wasted all the time.
