I simply can%27t stretch credulity far enough to encompass the idea that the best option%2C or even %5Bi%5Da viable%5B%2Fi%5D option%2C for constructing a starship was to use the 254-year-old wreck of a twentieth-century battleship. I mean... what%3F Sure%2C I mean%2C if you have a character who is the god of mecha and he%27s not really paying as much attention as he should be to what he%27s doing%2C yeah%2C but in a straight-up sci-fi story%3F%0D%0A%0D%0AI can %5Bi%5Dkind%5B%2Fi%5D of accept that the situation was desperate enough at that point that nobody really hesitated at the whole desecration-of-a-war-grave thing%2C but just from a %5Bi%5Dpractical%5B%2Fi%5D standpoint%2C the whole idea is %5Bi%5Dwack%5B%2Fi%5D. I mean%2C all the %5Bi%5Dother%5B%2Fi%5D incomprehensible things about making a starship out of a sunken WWII battleship aside%2C there%27s not likely to be much left of the wreck by 2199.%0D%0A%0D%0ALoved the show as a kid%2C respect it for its significance to the history of Japanese animation now%2C but... yeah. Makes no dang sense at all.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D. I%27ve read a few novels involving contemporary humans getting access to advanced space propulsion and converting modern in-service submarines for space. In all cases it was an expediency move made immediately after acquiring the new technology and before purpose-built hulls could be designed and built. Like in Space Battleship Yamato%2FStar Blazers%2C it was a desperation situation%2C defending against alien invasion or scouting for where aliens who had attacked may be located. But it made sense as a temporary stopgap - pressure hull%2C life support%2C nuclear reactor aboard already%2C etc. %0D%0A%0D%0AThat is quite different from Yamato%2C which was a 150 year old sunken wreck of a surface vessel. Surely other preserved ships would be better candidates. Or leveraging existing submarine manufacturing facilities. It was awesome to watch as a little kid%2C and the relatively-recent live action movie was pretty cool.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A 2|1|0|||||RE%3A Space Battleship Wha%3F|Tabasco||10:09:58|09/09/2015|[updated:LAST EDITED ON Sep-09-15 AT 10:10 AM (EDT)]In fairness%2C the 2199 remake drops the idea like a hot rock. The Yamato looks like an old warship as camouflage%2C since it%27s construction site is near the graves of several of them.
