I took the online version of this class %28ART 270%2C Digital Art%29 last year%2C but had to drop it midway through the semester for logistical reasons.  Unlike the live version%2C which started with an introduction to the Photoshop pen tool%2C the online version%27s first unit was about photomontage%2C and I did a couple of projects for same before leaving the class.  There was also a Photoshop exercise as part of the introductory 2D design class%2C ART 110%2C I had to take as one of the core prereqs for the graphic design minor.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe reason I mention this is because the first homework assignment in this version of ART 270 was%2C %22Enter up to four pieces of digital artwork for an upcoming exhibition at an art gallery downstate.%22%0D%0A%0D%0A%28That%27s right.  That was the %5Bi%5Dfirst%5B%2Fi%5D assignment.%29%0D%0A%0D%0ASo I trawled through my files from previous classes and came up with the Photoshop piece from ART 110%2C two photomontages from the online version of 270%2C and a random pen tool scribble from the first class meeting of this version%2C and sent them along%2C assuming that the jury would look at them%2C think%2C %5Bi%5DWell%2C this jagoff clearly isn%27t taking this seriously%2C%5B%2Fi%5D and bin them.  What else could I do%3F  I%27m not actually an artist.%0D%0A%0D%0AFor the record%2C here are my four submissions%3A%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Blink%3Awww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2Fgallerysubs%2FVanity%2520Projects.jpg%3Fx%7C%22Vanity Projects%22%5D%0D%0APhotomontage%0D%0AAdobe Photoshop%2C 2014%0D%0A%0D%0AThis was the product of the first photomontage assignment%2C %22Combine two photographs to make a statement about an issue.%22  The issue%2C in this case%2C was basically me rolling my eyes at the way the University of Maine%27s breathlessly self-congratulatory press releases made last year%27s multi-jillion-dollar renovation of the athletic fieldhouse seem like it was only slightly less important%2C in the course of human affairs%2C than the dang moon landings.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Blink%3Awww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2Fgallerysubs%2FSecret%2520Film.jpg%3Fx%7C%22Secret Film%22%5D%0D%0APhotomontage%0D%0AAdobe Photoshop%2C 2014%0D%0A%0D%0AThe second photomontage was more complicated%2C and required at least three photos be combined for a similar effect.  By this point I had realized that art is rooted almost entirely in fraud and means whatever the artist can claim it means with a straight face%2C so this is a protest piece about government secrecy.  Or nuclear war.  Or polar bear habitat loss.  Or maybe it%27s just a combination of the first three pictures I found in my odd-sock pics folder plus a shot of a drive-in movie theater I dug up online to pull it%2C like the Dude%27s rug%2C together.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Blink%3Awww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2Fgallerysubs%2FProgression.jpg%3Fx%7C%22Progression%22%5D%0D%0AAbstract%0D%0ASiemens Solid Edge ST5 and Adobe Photoshop%2C 2014%0D%0A%0D%0AThe assignment here was to use Photoshop to convey depth of field in a 2D illustration.  I used Solid Edge to make the blocks so that the perspective would be right %28because I%27m rubbish at doing that by hand%29%2C then cooked the rest of it in Photoshop to have the appropriate textures and shading. The purpose of Art Criticism is to attempt to divine the artist%27s goal and assess how well the work achieves that goal%2C not to pass judgement on it based on some abstract Ideal Of High Art. %22Secret Film%22 is actually commentary on the ridiculousness of requiring all art to make a statement%2C and the inability of modern art critics to appreciate beauty for its own sake%2C but I probably wouldn%27t have picked up on that without the hints from Gryphon%2C so it isn%27t that great. On the other hand%2C %22Vanity Projects%22 stands a fairly good chance of conveying the message Gryph meant it to without help%2C and the two abstract works perform their function of %22being pretty%22 perfectly well%2C so all three are pretty good.

Anyway%2C the instructor was very much an ART HAS MEANING AND IS SERIOUS BUSINESS kind of guy and I got tired of his over-intensity quickly enough. When I was in high school%2C I had a Tandy 1000 TX computer.  For those of you who came in late%2C this was an enhanced version of the original Tandy 1000 %28an IBM PCjr clone that%2C unlike the PCjr%2C was actually successful%2C mainly because its ergonomics were about 1000 miles ahead of the PCjr%27s%29.  At the time I had it%2C the TX was the top-of-the-line model%2C the best computer you could get at Radio Shack%2C and back then that was not the punch line of a joke.  It had better graphics than the original PC%2C and - most important for this story - it had built-in sound.  And by that I don%27t just mean a speaker that could go %22beep%22 and%2For %22blat%22%2C like the PC%27s speaker or the one in%2C e.g.%2C the Apple %2F%2Fe.  The Tandy sound system wasn%27t exactly THX%2C but it was high-end for its time%3B only Amigas could challenge it without aftermarket intervention.%0D%0A%0D%0AOK.  So I had the TX set up on a table in the living room back then%2C because thanks to the unique way in which %5Bs%5Dthe BBC%5B%2Fs%5Dour household was funded%2C%2A we didn%27t have central heating and the living room%2C where the woodstove was%2C was the only room in the house that was actually warm in the winter.  The events I%27m about to recount happened in the summertime%2C but still%2C that%27s why the computer was where it was.  Anyway%2C one afternoon I was sitting on the couch nearby%2C reading a book%3B I was the only one at home%2C the dog was asleep%2C and the house was quiet.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd I suddenly became aware that someone was speaking.  Not loud enough to be intelligible%2C but that distinctive pattern of low murmury sounds you get when%2C for instance%2C someone is talking outside the house%2C or watching TV in an upstairs room.  Except nobody %5Bi%5Dwas%5B%2Fi%5D talking outside the house%2C and the TVs upstairs weren%27t on.  When I got back downstairs from checking the latter%2C if I stood very still in the middle of the living room%2C I could still hear it.%0D%0A%0D%0ANow thoroughly weirded out%2C I checked down in the basement%3B nothing going on down there.  Back upstairs%2C I could still hear the sound.  I started walking around the room trying to figure out where it was coming from... and eventually realized it was emanating from the computer.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe thing was%2C the computer was %5Bi%5Dnot turned on%5B%2Fi%5D.  This was in about 1989%2C long before always-on Internet came to homes %28certainly long%2C %5Bi%5Dlong%5B%2Fi%5D before it came to %5Bi%5Dour%5B%2Fi%5D home%29%2C and there was no reason to leave a computer running when you weren%27t using it.  The Tandy was sitting there%2C completely powered off - in fact%2C we had it plugged into a power strip%2C and %5Bi%5Dthat%5B%2Fi%5D was turned off%2C so the computer%27s power supply wasn%27t even live - and the muffled%2C indistinct sound of someone talking was emanating from the speaker anyway.%0D%0A%0D%0AI sat at the table for a while%2C listening%2C trying to think what in the hell could possibly be going on.  As I noted before%2C I couldn%27t tell what the voice in the speaker was %5Bi%5Dsaying%5B%2Fi%5D%2C the volume was too low for that %28and of course adjusting the computer%27s volume knob did nothing%29%2C but something about the cadence of it seemed familiar%2C and I couldn%27t figure out why...%0D%0A%0D%0A... until it started saying something in what I recognized as the excited way the Red Sox radio commentator of the day made home run calls.  It was the play-by-play of a baseball game.  Shortly after that there was a pattern that%2C now that I had the context%2C was unmistakably the jingle for one of the radio baseball coverage%27s usual sponsors.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28This part wasn%27t quite as weird as it may seem - the local radio station in town carried Red Sox games in syndication on its AM program%2C and though I wasn%27t much of a baseball fan in those days%2C I occasionally listened to them because there was literally nothing else to do on some summer afternoons in Millinocket in the %2780s if you didn%27t like what was on the FM station %28mostly country music%29.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAt any rate%2C the house where I grew up is within a mile or so of both of the station%27s transmission towers - and evidently through some quirk of atmospherics or geometry or induction%2C the speaker assembly in my TX was sufficiently impinged upon by its signal for the program to be faintly audible sometimes.  That was the first time I noticed it%2C but it happened several more times over the year or so before I moved the computer to a different part of the room.%0D%0A%0D%0AAt no time%2C however%2C did it play silent movie piano music and remind me of my mortality%2C though. A voice was talking to him. Indistinct enough that he couldn%27t hear WHAT it said%2C but it said it constantly%2C with irregular breaks here and there.%0D%0A%0D%0AAfter a LOT of talking%2C and testing%2C and this and that and the other%2C the doctor%2C for some reason or another%2C leaned in really close to the guy%2C almost as if in a hug...and realized HE could hear it too.%0D%0A%0D%0ATurn out that the guy had multiple dental repairs%2C in different metals. These metals%2C along with his saliva%2C and weird and wonderful coincidences%2C is supposed to have worked as a radio receiver. The sound then transmitted from his teeth to his jawbone to his ear%2C creating the very faint noise he heard.%0D%0A%0D%0ASeems a bit far-fetched to me%2C but on the other hand%2C the weirdest and most bizarre stuff is the stuff that turns out to be true.%0D%0A%0D%0A...%21%0D%0AGott%27s Leetle Feesh in Trousers%21

Not all that far-fetched%2C as a crystal receiver is so simple and so low-tech that a good functional one could arguably be made with 18th-century technology.  %28It%27s the %5Bi%5Dtransmitter%5B%2Fi%5D that%27s a bit higher-tech.%29%0D%0A%0D%0ASadly%2C as I recall%2C the story%27s been debunked. Jolted out of a sound sleep about midnight by someone%27s voice coming out of %2Aevery%2A speaker in my house. I was home alone%2C and seriously freaked out. Turns out one of the neighbors was testing a seriously illegal power mod on his home base unit. %2850 watts on a CB is a no-no%2C kids%3B I was 12 and I knew the law better than that. Besides%2C his base hum was interfering with %2Amy%2A base unit even when he wasn%27t transmitting.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AThere may or may not have been an anonymous complaint called in to the local FCC office after the third night of this %3A%29 %2C but there wasn%27t a fourth.
