I saw pieces of the low-rez PDF version of this book in one of the graphic design courses I took last year%2C and well%2C it%27s just my kind of nerdy.  And there are still a little less than three days left if you want to get in on it.  It%27s already met its goal%2C the book is happening%2C but as it won%27t be offered for sale to non-backers subsequently%2C this is the way to get one.%0D%0A%0D%0AOr%2C well%2C won%27t be offered for sale to non-backers %5Bi%5Dsoon%5B%2Fi%5D%2C or %28probably%29 in quite the same form.  The people behind this project did a previous standards-manual Kickstarter I wasn%27t aware of when it was happening%2C to reissue the New York City Transit Authority%27s standards manual%2C and that also was only sold to KS backers - but they%27re coming out with %5Blink%3Astandardsmanual.com%2Fproducts%2Fnyctacompactedition%7Ca slightly less fancy edition%5D soon that anyone can buy. For pretty much the reasons that they like it. It may be that the Worm seems pedestrian now because%2C in the 18 or so years it was in use%2C it had so many imitators%2C in much the same way that the swoopy %5Bi%5DStar Trek%3A The Motion Picture%5B%2Fi%5D titles font seems overly mannered now because every dang scifi property in the galaxy came up with a similar-looking font in its wake.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28Similarly%2C one expects the designer of Impact was %5Bi%5Dnot%5B%2Fi%5D envisioning the day when the sight of the font automatically calls to mind cat photos with preciously misspelled captions.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAlso%2C I should note that the red element of the %22meatball%22 insignia%2C which as you point out often gets used without the rest of the logo%2C is called the Vector%2C for obvious reasons.  %28I believe it was retconned in %5Bi%5DStar Trek%3A Enterprise%5B%2Fi%5D that the Starfleet arrowhead logo evolved from the Vector. How %0D%0A%3Edid they retcon the TOS starfleet logo%3F %0D%0A%0D%0AI don%27t remember if the Vector-like %22intermediate%22 form that appeared in %5Bi%5DEnterprise%5B%2Fi%5D was only part of the title ship%27s mission patch%2C or was an agency-wide insignia.  %28They also introduced another organization that used a logo which was recognizably the star from the TOS %22Command%22 version of the %5Bi%5DEnterprise%5B%2Fi%5D insignia%2C the implication being that they eventually converged sometime between the 2160s and the 2260s.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AFor the most part%2C later properties have mostly ignored the fact that the famous emblem was only on %5Bi%5DEnterprise%5B%2Fi%5D crewmen%27s uniforms in the original series%2C probably because it would take too long to explain on-camera.  They%27ve discarded the concept entirely in the recent movies%2C for example%3B in the opening scene of %5Bi%5DStar Trek%5B%2Fi%5D %282009%29%2C the %5Bi%5DKelvin%5B%2Fi%5D crew are wearing it 20-some years before %5Bi%5DEnterprise%5B%2Fi%5D was built%2C so in that timeline it%27s evidently always been the logo for all of Starfleet.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D. This being when Kirk and crew were the much heralded heroes of the fleet for their 5 year mission the decision was made to use the insignia of the Enterprise.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe opinions of the crews of other ships is not recorded.%0D%0A%0D%0A%2A Which probably isn%27t official%2C admittedly.

Which is a real shame%2C as the book is one of my favorites as a Trek fan.%0D%0A
