Also%2C it seems to explain with the E-11 has such horrible aim %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A-Z %5Bi%5D%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A---%0D%0ARemember kids%3A guns make you stupid%2C duct tape makes you smart. 1|1|0|||1||RE%3A SW Armory|Gryphon||16:25:05|12/19/2015|[updated:LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-15 AT 04:26 PM (EST)]%3EAlso%2C it seems to explain with the E-11 has such horrible aim %3A%29 %0D%0A%0D%0AWell%2C it%27s based on the Sterling SMG%2C of course you can%27t hit anything with it. %22If only we still had our Stens%22 is not something you will ever hear from anyone... except a 1960s British soldier carrying a Sterling. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0AI get that most of this guy%27s snark is for deliberate comic effect%2C so I%27m not speaking directly to his narrative here%2C but the tone of the thing reminds me of something I was thinking more generally about a while ago%2C namely%3A What a lot of people nowadays seem not to know%2C when they start riffing on things like ILM%27s habit of kitbashing German tank parts onto spaceship models and basing galactic small arms on mid-century military firearms with greeblies attached%2C is that the original %5Bi%5DStar Wars%5B%2Fi%5D was not a terribly high-budget movie%2C and most of that budget went on the moco rig and optical effects for the spaceflight scenes. With most of the principal photography conducted in England%2C it makes a lot of sense that the studio armorers they used would have had access to a lot of World War II-vintage weapons%3B WWII movies were still very big in Britain at the time%2C and so the prop department at someplace like Elstree was naturally going to have %5Bi%5Dconexes%5B%2Fi%5D full of British and German guns from the war. Why reinvent the wheel%3F%0D%0A%0D%0APersonally%2C I think that%27s one of the best things about %5Bi%5DStar Wars%5B%2Fi%5D%2C doubly so because it was originally largely unintentional. Even if you don%27t know what the real-life things under those props are%2C you can tell on some level that there %5Bi%5Dare%5B%2Fi%5D real-life things under them. It gives the technology in the setting an underlying air of authenticity that tends to be lacking in%2C for instance%2C %5Bi%5DStar Trek%5B%2Fi%5D %28particularly the newer movies%E2%80%94the tech in those films is very %5Bi%5Dpretty%5B%2Fi%5D but not%2C to me%2C terribly convincing%29. I can picture Han Solo with the bits of his blaster all spread out on the chess table%2C or a stormtrooper doing a bit of field expedient maintenance. Less easy to envision with%2C for instance%2C one of those arty chrome phaser pistols from the 2009 %5Bi%5DStar Trek%5B%2Fi%5D movie.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D. The new SW film was made more %0D%0A%3Elike the original%3A lots of models and practical effects rather than %0D%0A%3ECGI. %0D%0A%0D%0AWhat I%27m talking about above doesn%27t necessarily preclude CG%2C though%3B it%27s mostly about the design rather than the actual realization. A starship realized primarily digitally %5Bi%5Dcan%5B%2Fi%5D have a similar underlying design philosophy%2C and indeed nowadays many are coming to do so. And by %22there are real-life things under them%2C%22 I didn%27t mean real as opposed to digital%2C I meant real as in %22the prop is based on something that was originally made with the intent that it be used for something%2C not just designed and fabricated from scratch.%22 Again%2C it%27s theoretically possible that there could be digital %22props%22 designed along similar lines%2C with an underlying structuret that is a digital representation of some real object. Less likely than with the details on starships%2C admittedly%2C and I do see what you%27re getting at%2C but it%27s not quite directly connected to what I was talking about.%0D%0A%0D%0AThat said%2C it%27s kind of darkly amusing to me that what used to be a hallmark of low-budget expediency is now a high-priced%2C somewhat self-righteous Craft Movement. It%27s a little like how in the 19th century%2C only rich people could afford to be fat%2C and in the 21st%2C only rich people can afford to be thin. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D.
