Figured I%27d start sharing things by sending them to you first.%0D%0A%0D%0AThough I didn%27t read much%2C I remember reading the UF Core sections a long time ago and followed up a little on the newer installments. I%27d like to know how that%27s going and what new works you%27ve put in as a result %28and in addition%2C which ones you%27ve set aside like with Buffy%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe major reason why I got into your fic is because I%27ve been working on similar projects of my own. If at its highest potential%2C it could even rival yours. It%27s mostly in the form of video games%2C but I%27m looking forward to writing a few fanfics%2C starting from the chronological beginning for my main character.%0D%0A%0D%0AI wanted to ask some tips about how you made the massive background that is Undocumented Features. You mentioned how you despised the first few installments and would%27ve scrapped them if it was for the positive reception.I wanted to ask for some tips in relation.%0D%0A- What did you find wrong with your first few works%3F How did you learn and fix these problems in the later installments%3F%0D%0A- What other tricks did you learn to create better crossover writing material%3F%0D%0A- What other suggestions do you have%3F%0D%0A%0D%0ASince we%27re here%2C I%27d like give some details of said project. I call it Megacosmos %28last initial in my alias%29 and it is named after a massive circle of parallel universes that serves as the setting. Each universe contains a fictional universe and behaves like an organic cell. Currently%2C it has 4 million Earth years of history and has divided into ten political bodies. Though there was no theme to begin with%2C it now revolves around the idea of our interaction with fiction. The main character is Jamey Jason %28also part of my name%29%2C who represents the typical otaku fan%2C and one of the deuteragonists is his sister Tammy Jason%2C who wants to live normal and has little clue about the worlds her brother knows.%0D%0A%0D%0AWell%2C I%27ll await your reply and if you want%2C I can tell more about my series. I also have many original projects worth sharing. 1|1|0|||1||RE%3A From Jamey|Gryphon||14:42:16|01/10/2016|%3EThough I didn%27t read much%2C I remember reading the UF Core sections a %0D%0A%3Elong time ago and followed up a little on the newer installments. That%27s... not really answerable as asked%2C I mean%2C it%27s a big dang project%2C and it%27s evolved fairly organically as opposed to following a predetermined master plan. I doubt we on the EPU team even %5Bi%5Dknow%5B%2Fi%5D%2C comprehensively%2C what-all is in here any more. Often%2C when rereading older pieces%2C I come across things that I know are references%2C and I know I wrote them%2C but I can%27t for the life of me remember what they%27re actually references %5Bi%5Dto%5B%2Fi%5D.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs for what%27s left out%2C that%27s also a much wider topic than can really be covered in any depth on the Forum%2C though I suppose in that case a distinction can at least be made between stuff that%27s not in here because one or more of us don%27t know anything about it %28which is... well%2C a lot of stuff%2C I mean%2C I%27m sure I%27m unaware of most of what%27s going on in pop culture howadays%2C I%27m an old hermit%29 and stuff we%27re deliberately leaving out.%0D%0A%0D%0AYou mentioned %5Bi%5DBuffy the Vampire Slayer%5B%2Fi%5D%2C which is one example of the latter. Another is %5Bi%5DFirefly%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and for the same basic reason%2C that being that Bad Robot has lawyers and a pretty-well-documented track record of using them%2C and we don%27t want that. There%27s a handful of stuff we steer clear of because we either don%27t like it or feel it%27s been done to death %28%5Bi%5DRanma 1%2F2%5B%2Fi%5D is both of those%29. But%2C again%2C there%27s no master list we keep around for reference. It%27s just a thing that happens.%0D%0A%0D%0A%3EYou mentioned how you despised the %0D%0A%3Efirst few installments and would%27ve scrapped them if it was for the %0D%0A%3Epositive reception.%0D%0A%0D%0AWell%2C sort of. I mean%2C I didn%27t despise them %5Bi%5Dat the time%5B%2Fi%5D%3B only in retrospect%2C after enough time had passed that my sensibilities had changed and I started to perceived things as clunky%2C or mishandled%2C or just not very elegant. I think that happens to every writer who lives long enough. I%27m sure there are passages in %5Bi%5DNeuromancer%5B%2Fi%5D that make William Gibson wince now.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28On a cinematic level%2C you see this mechanism at work every time George Lucas releases a new even-specialer edition of %5Bi%5DStar Wars%5B%2Fi%5D. Which also makes a fairly strong case for %5Bi%5Dnot%5B%2Fi%5D obeying the impulse to make repairs%3B after a certain time%2C these things have lives of their own. If I tried to %22fix%22 the original %5Bi%5DUndocumented Features%5B%2Fi%5D that way%2C the result would probably be %5Bi%5Dwoeful%5B%2Fi%5D.%29%0D%0A%0D%0A%3E- What did you find wrong with your first few works%3F How did you learn %0D%0A%3Eand fix these problems in the later installments%3F %0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s mostly just a matter of polish and experience%2C I think. It%27s like any kind of craft output%2C I suppose%26mdash%3Bthe first sweater someone who takes up knitting attempts isn%27t likely to look as nice as one that same knitter makes after being at it for 20-some years. In some cases%2C I%27m not very happy with the technical execution%3B in others%2C looking back on them%2C I feel like I hadn%27t really found my voice yet. Which is not to say today%27s output is perfect%2C by any stretch%21 Fallible humanity and all that. The downside%2C if you want to call it that%2C of experience is the opportunity it presents for the development of bad habits. This is why you occasionally see really amazing%2C creative%2C daring first novels%26mdash%3Bthey come from writers who didn%27t know they can%27t write like that. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0A%3E- What other tricks did you learn to create better crossover writing %0D%0A%3Ematerial%3F %0D%0A%0D%0AI always have trouble answering questions like this%2C for the same reason that I had trouble with the ones above%3A I don%27t really work in a way that%27s... I don%27t know%2C %5Bi%5Dconsidered%5B%2Fi%5D enough for there to be identifiable steps in it. The crossover stuff in UF largely just %5Bi%5Dhappens%5B%2Fi%5D%2C because it%27s the way my head works. Stuff goes into this mental database I have that%27s constantly trying to relate them%2C even though I know they%27re not actually related%2C and sometimes surprisingly non-accidental-looking convergences come out. There%27s no trick to it that I can relate. I know this is a disappointing answer%2C I%27ve been told it is often enough%2C but I can%27t help that. This is how it really works for me.%0D%0A%0D%0A%3E- What other suggestions do you have%3F %0D%0A%0D%0AWell%2C since I don%27t really work to a set of conscious guidelines%2C I don%27t have much in the way of process tips to offer%2C so all I can really suggest is to do with mindset. This stuff can get discouraging%2C especially when you%27re deliberately setting out on a project that has the kind of scale you%27re describing here. I think the thing that saved UF from that sort of problem at the start is the fact that it wasn%27t %5Bi%5Dintended%5B%2Fi%5D to be this great sprawling thing%2C it developed into one of its own accord%2C layer by layer%2C like limestone. Now%2C of course%2C it%27s big enough that stepping back for a wide shot causes a sort of creative vertigo. In a case like yours%2C where you%27ve got a master plan in place when you start out%2C just the size of the thing could be intimidating.%0D%0A%0D%0AAt times like that%2C I%27ve found that the only really useful offset is investment in the characters. When the universe itself is too large and complicated for my poor old brain to be able to cope with%2C there are always the people in it to spur me along%2C because I%27m invested in them and I don%27t want to let them down. %28Upon reflection%2C this is probably why most of the more recent %22imports%22 to UF started with the people and then brought along bits of their original settings and whatnot in with them as creative space allowed.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAlso%2C there%27s a variation on the same mental trick that can be used to make a very long drive bearable%2C which is to break it down into smaller pieces. I%27m not writing a gigantic%2C interconnected%2C multi-time-period-spanning metafictional saga%21 I%27m just trying to get poor Corwin out of this mess he%27s gotten into with the two submarines and the Earthforce Navy. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway%2C I hope this helps%2C even though it%27s a bit of a muddle and a lot of shrugging. I%27m never any good at answering process questions%2C because I%27ve come to believe that %22process%22 in a creative sense is such an intensely personal thing that knowing how someone else%27s works isn%27t really helpful%2C apart from satisfying curiosity.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D. Things like food%2C habitable worlds and overall social stability.%0D%0A%0D%0AEventually%2C the hopelessness ended upon the discovery of 4th and 5th dimensions. The former opened up to other worlds parallel only to theirs or %22parallels%22. The latter allowed them to bypass their own universe and find the other universes%2C or in this case%2C the other fiction worlds. The discovery of these universes resulted in exploding expansion.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe two powers that joined together easily separated once the technology to travel to these worlds became practical. Usually%2C they would%27ve united more these two powers waged war under nationalism %28an invalid ideology%29%3B instead%2C they were under two distinct ideologies about how the world works or should work. The first and largest of the groups is the Union%2FKingdom of Good%2C a monotheistic empire who%27s concerned about happy endings. The other smaller one is the Coalition of Magical and Technological Republics%2C which were more about representing the nations they found and giving them the freedom what to do in their universes. Their campaign give complete happy endings and belief in one deity really conflicted with many universes who thought otherwise and the UG needed something to suppress it. She also had help by uniting with the more heroic forces rebelling%2C but unless these were anti-villains into their respective works%2C these got betrayed shortly after the UG%27s capital fell%2C either imprisoned%2C killed or suffering fates worse than death.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe remains of the UG were in complete chaos%2C but were united by a military organization known as the Socialist Organization%2C Leaders%2C Armies%2C Races and Religions or S.O.L.A.R.R. %28now known as Solarria thanks to reforms%29. By harnessing the power of analogy and metaphor%2C you might get something out of it.%0D%0A%0D%0A- I%27d like to know how that%27s going and what new works you%27ve put in as a result %28and in addition%2C which ones you%27ve set aside like with Buffy%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhen choosing new libraries to work with%2C you need to consider a few things. Is it a good%2C consistent piece of software%3F Does it have at least one useful part that you really want%2Fneed to use%2C or are you just thinking about it because it%27s new and shiny%3F Is it going to be a easy enough to use or work into your project%3F Often%2C you%27ll end up choosing just based on how fun it looks like working in -- which isn%27t a bad metric%2C since you%27ll be more productive if you%27re happy. But beware of adding complexity that doesn%27t solve the problem at hand.%0D%0A%0D%0ASometimes you have to exclude the software outright because of licensing concerns. Like if a code has a GPL license and that%27s incompatible with your existing license -- Stallman is well known for hiring lawyers to enforce copyright.%0D%0A%0D%0A- What did you find wrong with your first few works%3F How did you learn and fix these problems in the later installments%3F%0D%0A%0D%0ATo be honest%2C everyone thinks that their first program sucks. As you keep learning%2C you find your standards change. Myself from six months ago was %2Asuch%2A an idiot. Like Rumsfeld said%2C there are %22unknown unknowns%22%2C and you can%27t fix things that you don%27t know are broken yet. Still%2C the best way to learn is to keep writing more code.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn the best case scenario%2C programmers like to %22build one to throw away%22 -- a basic system that gets you started%2C from which you find out the real problems and build a much better version. Real life seldom works this way. I%27m still working on code that my CEO wrote in 6 months%2C 10 years ago%2C to get clients served ASAP. It has rough edges%2C but it works pretty good%2C so we keep adding to it.%0D%0A%0D%0AIf I use an analogy from megacrossover fiction%2C Gryphon originally intended UF as a throwaway story before the real writing began. And then the whole thing took on a life of its own%2C despite some decisions that%2C with retrospect%2C were probably not great for the project. Still%2C it%27s a testament to how good that base actually was that CORE still anchors much of the story.%0D%0A%0D%0ABut back to software%21 Fixing mistakes is something that get very difficult if other parts of the program depend on the badly designed part. Often%2C you just try to route around the damage by avoiding calling the bad section%2C or encapsulating the code in something better. You can probably replace it completely %28retcon%29 if you have tests %28sorry not applicable to fiction%29%2C but this takes a lot of work.%0D%0A%0D%0A- What other tricks did you learn to create better crossover writing material%3F%0D%0A%0D%0ARead a lot. Read manuals on how to write good code%2C and read examples of code you want to write like. Make sure what you%27re writing is well documented%2C so that you don%27t forget why you did something.%0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s easy for things to sprawl all over the place%2C so make sure that you don%27t ramble all over the place %28GOTO considered harmful%2C etc.%29 The hardest part of writing software is choosing the correct abstractions. Human attention is limited%2C so try to keep a few things in focus at any one time.%0D%0A%0D%0A- What other suggestions do you have%3F%0D%0A%0D%0AUse a version control software like git to keep track of your changes%2C so you don%27t lose anything you want later. I do this for my creative writing too%2C though a deletions file can work in a pinch. Even save work-in-progress.%0D%0A%0D%0ANever implement your own crypto%28-lesbian subtext%29.%0D%0A%0D%0A- Have you ever thought of giving your works original motifs and themes as well to your works%3F %0D%0A%0D%0AYou will always have your own writing style%2C and that will show in the code. But in general%2C choose the approach that will best let you solve the problem %28i.e. use themes that will best help you tell your story%29. Choose between object-oriented%2C functional programming%2C simple scripting%2C or whatever based on the task at hand -- don%27t try to force your code into something that it%27s not.
