The place has a dark history%3B its top floors were used as torture chambers by the Japanese during the second world war and by the military regime in the 1960s and 70s. I love%2C love love love%2C stories of urbanization and the logistics and history surrounding it. I have a well-thumbed copy of %5Bi%5DCadillac Desert%5B%2Fi%5D on the shelf near me%2C along with Caro%27s %5Bi%5DThe Power Broker%5B%2Fi%5D%2C although that%27s a bit more about politics than it is about Robert Moses%27 development strategy.%0D%0A%0D%0A%3E%28The %5Bi%5DGuardian%5B%2Fi%5D%27s curious reluctance to capitalize things that %0D%0A%3Eshould be capitalized%2C such as %22Second World War%22%2C also routinely %0D%0A%3Eraises my eyebrows%2C as does the British press%27s recent habit of not %0D%0A%3Ecapitalizing acronyms%2C but that is neither here nor there for our %0D%0A%3Ecurrent purposes.%29 %0D%0A%0D%0AI rolled this over in my head and I can kind of%2C sort of%2C suss out the reasoning in this specific instance. I think. I can see someone deciding %22World War II is a proper noun and should be capitalized%2C second world war is not%2C it%27s merely referring to the second of a series of world wars. So you don%27t capitalize it for the same reason I didn%27t capitalize %27world wars%27 in the sentence immediately preceding this one.%22 %0D%0A%0D%0AI would not necessarily agree with that logic%2C on aesthetic grounds if nothing else%2C but the argument might just be wrong without actually being risible.%0D%0A%0D%0AHow the hell do you not capitalize an acronym%2C though%3F I mean...
