There have been some places I%27ve never heard of%2C and new information about some that I have.  I%27m getting toward the end now%2C and in %5Blink%3Awww.theguardian.com%2Fcities%2F2016%2Fmay%2F20%2Fmyanmar-democracy-yangon-changing-skyline%7Cone of the last entries%5D %28on what%27s become of the former capital city of Burma%2C Rangoon%2C which is now the non-capital city of Mynamar%2C Yangon%29%2C I just ran across something that raised an eyebrow%3A%0D%0A%0D%0A%22The lawyers of Yangon could have done with a little divine intervention in their recent battle against the privatisation of the former high court and police commissioner%E2%80%99s office%2C a grand classical edifice whose ionic colonnade marches around an entire city block facing the waterfront on Strand Road. The place has a dark history%3B its top floors were used as torture chambers by the Japanese during the second world war and by the military regime in the 1960s and 70s. I think. I can see someone deciding %22World War II is a proper noun and should be capitalized%2C second world war is not%2C it%27s merely referring to the second of a series of world wars. So you don%27t capitalize it for the same reason I didn%27t capitalize %27world wars%27 in the sentence immediately preceding this one.%22 %0D%0A%0D%0AI would not necessarily agree with that logic%2C on aesthetic grounds if nothing else%2C but the argument might just be wrong without actually being risible.%0D%0A%0D%0AHow the hell do you not capitalize an acronym%2C though%3F I mean... I have treated them like regular words on accident sometimes. I%27ve typed %22Nasa%22 and %22Norad%22 when I meant %22NASA%22 and %22NORAD.%22 But that%27s me fucking up. I %0D%0A%3Ehave treated them like regular words on accident sometimes. I%27ve typed %0D%0A%3E%22Nasa%22 and %22Norad%22 when I meant %22NASA%22 and %22NORAD.%22 But that%27s me %0D%0A%3Efucking up. And I don%27t run a newspaper. %0D%0A%0D%0AThe explanation I%27ve seen that it%27s a visual indication of whether a name made up from initials is an initialism %28i.e.%2C you say the letters individually%29 or an acronym %28spoken as a word%29.  So%2C for instance%2C in modern British press parlance the European Space Agency is still the ESA%2C but NASA is Nasa.  %28Also Norad%2C Nascar%2C Comsublant%2C and so forth.%29  I can see the logic behind it%26mdash%3Bit %5Bi%5Dis%5B%2Fi%5D a clear indication of whether you%27re dealing with one or the other%26mdash%3Band it%27s been put to me as nothing more than the next logical extension beyond omitting the periods %28which we already do%2C nobody calls it N.A.S.A. any more%29%2C but I still find it irritating as fuck.%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D.
