He used to be the host of %5Bi%5DThe Tonight Show%5B%2Fi%5D on NBC%2C and he made his name as a stand-up comedian%2C although I primarily think of him as a car collector these days.  %5Blink%3Awww.youtube.com%2Fchannel%2FUCQMELFlXQL38KPm8kM-4Adg%7CHis YouTube channel%5D is a festival of strange and wondrous things if you%27re into that sort of thing.%0D%0A%0D%0AI see a lot of comments on his YouTube videos to the effect that%2C despite the fact that he has the kind of money that enables a man to build his own personal classic car museum and stock it with the likes of pre-war Bugattis%2C he seems like Such A Nice Regular Guy.  And maybe he is%21  But he did insult my father.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis was a long time ago%2C mind you.  I think it might have been before he got the %5Bi%5DTonight Show%5B%2Fi%5D gig%2C even%2C back when his connection to the show was that he was the guy who usually filled in for Johnny Carson when the latter was on vacation.   Dad and I went to see him live at what was still called the Maine Center for the Arts back then %28it%27s the Collins Center now%2C after the wealthy family that gave the University of Maine a bunch of money to put their name on the building%2C which%2C well%2C at least it%27s not the Gillette Center for the Arts Presented by Cadillac or something%26mdash%3Banyway%2C I digress%29%2C and just as he was starting his act%2C Jay looked around%2C pointed at Dad%2C and said%2C%0D%0A%0D%0A%22I see a rather large gentleman at the back%26mdash%3Bsir%2C there are four empty seats up here if you%27d like them.%22%0D%0A%0D%0ADad laughed%2C because you have to laugh in situations like that or %5Bi%5Dyou%27re%5B%2Fi%5D the asshole%2C and Jay got on with his shtick.  Twenty minutes or so later%2C a group of four women started making their way toward the middle of the front row with many mumbled apologies%2C and Jay stopped and accosted them%3A %22Where have you been%3F%21  I nearly gave your seats to that man back there%21%22%0D%0A%0D%0ANow%2C I%27m not daft enough to assume that he meant anything personal by it%26mdash%3Bthat was the kind of comedian he was%2C at the time%2C and it was a less considerate age all the way around%26mdash%3Bbut I always think of it when I see people online gushing about how nice he seems.%0D%0A%0D%0AThat said%2C I do have to acknowledge that he%27s one of those people I would emulate bits of if I had the resources.
