We were pretty used to that kind of thing at Katahdin Avenue School at the time%2C since of the three K-5 schools%2C only Granite Street had a proper gym%2C so we had to bus over there twice a week for phys ed class anyway.%2A%0D%0A%0D%0AThe reason for this particular trip was not gym class%2C although our destination was still the gym. Rather%2C we were going there because it was the only room in the school system big enough to get all six classes of fourth-graders into at once for assembly purposes.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis particular assembly was to introduce us to the idea of joining the school band%2C which was a thing that started in fifth grade in those days. In retrospect%2C the way they did it makes more sense to me now than it did at the time. At the time I thought it was odd that they%27d have a school band for only one year at the elementary level %28since the schools here ran%2C and still run%2C K-5%2C 6-8%2C 9-12%29%2C but now I understand that it was to weed out the kids who wouldn%27t stick with it before they got to sixth grade%2C so that the middle school band director would only have to deal with students who were at least slightly taking it seriously.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway. Sorry%2C I digress. Late in fourth grade%2C there we all were in the gym over at Granite Street%2C while the music teacher %28we%27ll call her Mrs. Nash%2C on account of that%27s her name%29 explained the school band%2C introduced the various instruments we could choose from%2C and asked anyone who was interested in signing up to stay at the end. Once the crowd was down to just the kids who wanted to join%2C she went around asking each of us what instrument we%27d like to learn%2C and there was a guy on hand from the music supply place the school system had a contract with who would hook us %28read%3A our parents%29 up with a rental instrument and so on.%0D%0A%0D%0AThere%27s an important detail you need to know%2C which is this%3A very shortly before this assembly%2C the school department had a new rubberized floor installed in the Granite Street gym. So shortly that%2C when we went there for the band assembly%2C the place still reeked of the glue they%27d used to stick it down.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%27ve always been vulnerable to solvents for whatever reason%2C so by the time the end of the assembly rolled around%2C I was %5Bi%5Dhigh as a damn kite%5B%2Fi%5D.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis is probably why%2C when Mrs. Nash asked what instrument I wanted to learn%2C I told her%2C %22Baritone%2C definitely.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AI mean%2C who ever heard of the baritone horn%3F Not me%2C until that assembly. I went in there planning to pick the saxophone so I could be a Cool Jazz Dude. Instead%2C on the spur of the moment%2C I chose an instrument unknown to laypersons outside of English colliery brass bands and German-American oompah bars. Other kids got to be Cool Jazz Dudes. I embraced my inner Bavarian.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28OK%2C to be fair%2C in high school I did also take up the trombone to play in the jazz band. If you didn%27t know%2C the common-or-garden tenor trombone plays in the same dynamic range as the baritone%2C with sheet music written the same way and using the same mouthpiece%2C so it%27s a reasonably easy transition apart from learning the slide positions as opposed to valve fingerings. But still.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AThe strategy in having the assembly at the end of fourth grade was that we%27d all have the summer with our shiny new rented%2Fborrowed instruments and the introductory music book we were issued by the school%2C to learn the fundamentals on our own recognizance%2C and then we could get stuck right in on learning the ensemble part once we were all together for fifth grade in the fall.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis worked out about as well as you would expect with a pack of fifth-graders%2C but still%2C we had a good time.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway%2C I played the baritone in the schools%27 concert band for the next seven years%2C and the pep band in high school. %28You didn%27t really have a choice about being in the pep band if you were in the concert band. They were the same thing. This was kind of a special purgatory for me%2C since I couldn%27t be arsed with either football or basketball%2C and suddenly I had to go to all the home games. And gods forbid we should make it to the state tournament%2C which still happened most years back in those days. Fun fact%3A my high school alma mater used to be a Sports Powerhouse renowned throughout the state%2C and that was still echoing in the late %2780s when I was there%2C though even then the writing was on the wall in re the shrinkage of the community and consequent drying up of the talent pool as far as student athletes went.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AI had been using an instrument borrowed from the school system the whole time%E2%80%94most kids had to rent their instruments%2C but those of us who chose the bigger and less common ones could borrow them from the school%E2%80%94until for Christmas my junior year%2C my father bought me a euphonium. A euphonium is like a baritone that went to college.%0D%0A%0D%0AWell%2C OK%2C that%27s mostly a joke. The real difference is mainly down to the bore geometry%E2%80%94baritones are mostly cylindrical%2C where euphonia have a markedly conical bore%E2%80%94which makes the sound of a baritone brighter and %22brassier%22%2C though they have identical frequency ranges. Euphonia sound more %22orchestral%22 and baritones more sort of marching band-y%2C if that makes any sense.%0D%0A%0D%0AMost%2C but not all%2C euphonia also have a fourth valve%2C which most%2C but not all%2C baritones lack. This is used to access lower pitches%2C giving the euphonium more overlap with the range of the tuba so that the band can have a richer low-end sound. %28I had to look that up%2C because in the time I owned that euphonium I never actually had occasion to %5Bi%5Duse%5B%2Fi%5D the fourth valve.%29 %0D%0A%0D%0AThe euphonium and I had a couple of adventures my senior year%2C including a state-wide invitational music festival in which I was chosen to play second chair%2C and then we were off to college. Things kind of fell apart then. Partly that was my fault%E2%80%94I got distracted from basically %5Bi%5Deverything%5B%2Fi%5D at WPI%2C including%2C um%2C the actual school part%E2%80%94but partly it was not. You see%2C the year I arrived at WPI%2C Alden Hall%2C the building that housed the performing arts department%2C was being renovated%2C which meant the Institute%27s concert band didn%27t have access to its normal practice space.%0D%0A%0D%0AInstead%2C it had been banished to a dismal storeroom in the basement of the George C. Gordon Library%2C where%E2%80%94and this is the really important part%E2%80%94there was no secure storage for instruments. This meant that every time the band gathered to rehearse%2C which happened in the evenings%2C I had to carry the instrument about half a mile across campus from Morgan Hall to the library%2C and then back again when rehearsal was over.%0D%0A%0D%0AA euphonium%2C if you are not aware%2C is not a lightweight musical instrument. Including its %28really quite lovely%29 hardwood case%2C which was the size of a biggish stereo speaker of the period%2C mine must have weighed at least 20 pounds%2C probably closer to 25. Dragging this a mile round-trip at night in the fall and winter in New England gets old... %5Bi%5Dpretty fast%5B%2Fi%5D. So I stopped going%2C and stopped playing %28because who plays solo euphonium%3F%29%2C and the next summer allowed the instrument to be sold to defray some of the expenses incurred during my %28from an academic standpoint%2C and my father%27s%29 completely wasted year at WPI.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd that%2C well%2C that was the end of that.%0D%0A%0D%0AUntil the other day%2C when this arrived at my door.%0D%0A%0D%0Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2F1974%2520Besson%2520euphonium%2Fupon%2520arrival.jpg%0D%0A%0D%0AThis%2C gentlepersons%2C is a 1974 Besson three-valve compensating euphonium%2C and it has %5Bi%5Dseen some shit%5B%2Fi%5D.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28NOTE%3A The photo above is one I took with my phone when the instrument arrived%3B the rest below %28and others in that folder%29 are from the eBay listing I bought it from.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AYou will note that it has %5Bi%5Dzero%5B%2Fi%5D lacquer finish remaining%2C and that it doesn%27t quite go with that case. Oddly%2C in the auction listing%2C it%27s shown in a different case%2C which it %5Bi%5Dalso%5B%2Fi%5D didn%27t quite match with. Why the switch%2C I don%27t know.%0D%0A%0D%0Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2F1974%2520Besson%2520euphonium%2F01.jpg%0D%0A%0D%0AApart from the condition of its finish%2C or lack thereof%2C the most arresting of this horn%27s battle scars is this one%3A%0D%0A%0D%0Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2F1974%2520Besson%2520euphonium%2F02.jpg http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2F1974%2520Besson%2520euphonium%2F06.jpg%0D%0A%0D%0AIt looks like at some point%2C someone had to replace a whole slice of the instrument%27s bell. Whoever it was did a good job%3B you can clearly %5Bi%5Dsee%5B%2Fi%5D it%2C but the surface is smooth there. If you run your finger across it%2C you can%27t feel the seam.%0D%0A%0D%0AInterestingly%2C although this is only a three-valve instrument%2C it is a compensating one%2C which I%27ve never had the opportunity to play before.%0D%0A%0D%0Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2F1974%2520Besson%2520euphonium%2F07.jpg%0D%0A%0D%0AThat means it has those extra little loops of tubing on the Nos. 2 and 3 valves%2C which are there to compensate for their tendency to play a little sharp in the low registers. It also has bottom-sprung valves%2C which is cool. Every other horn I%27ve ever played has had valves with concentric springs%2C which makes the cylinders shorter%2C but doesn%27t have quite as smooth an action. And despite the fact that this instrument is battered and worn%2C the valves still work perfectly %28or they did once I oiled No. 1%29.%0D%0A%0D%0Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.eyrie-productions.com%2FG-GFX%2F1974%2520Besson%2520euphonium%2F08.jpg%0D%0A%0D%0AAll the tuning slides work%2C too%2C even the little one on No. 2 valve %28and those things are %5Bi%5Dalways%5B%2Fi%5D stuck%29.%0D%0A%0D%0ANow%2C for about the same money I paid for this%2C I %5Bi%5Dcould%5B%2Fi%5D have bought a brand-shiny-new baritone or euphonium%2C non-compensating but with four valves. I chose not to do this and go for an old warhorse like this one for a few reasons. One is that I like my things to have a bit of history%2C even if I don%27t know what it is%2C the same as with my gun collection. Another is that I have no idea what sort of quality to expect from new-construction student-grade band instruments these days%2C%2A%2A and anything costing less than%2C say%2C a thousand bucks will have been made overseas. Although I am not a %5Bi%5Drabid%5B%2Fi%5D %22buy American-made%22 guy%2C I do think things like musical instruments should be sourced from factories that %5Bi%5Donly make musical instruments%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and not%2C say%2C musical instruments%2C industrial plumbing supplies%2C and tractor parts.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo anyway. I%27ve got me a euphonium again. I also bought a collapsible music stand and the first volume of %5Bi%5DHal Leonard Band Essentials%5B%2Fi%5D for baritone %28because%2C probably for reasons of cost%2C virtually nobody starts out on the euphonium%3B they almost always do what I did and start on the baritone%2C then switch it up later if they want to go upmarket%29. And on Monday%2C I sat down and made the first noises I%27ve made with a euphonium in 29 years.%0D%0A%0D%0AThey were%2C of course%2C %5Bi%5Dterrible%5B%2Fi%5D. Oh my God fugeddaboudit%2C as Jay Leno would say. Surprisingly%2C I still remember most of the basics%E2%80%94I can still %28kind of%29 read %28bass clef%29 music%2C and my fingers remember most of the fingerings even if I don%27t. I can still%2C after all this time%2C play a B%E2%99%AD major scale without having to think about it. But my wind and my embouchure have both gone %5Bi%5Dcompletely%5B%2Fi%5D to shit. I have effectively zero attack and no control over my intonation. I sound like%2C well%2C like I did in the fifth grade.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis was fully expected.%0D%0A%0D%0AI had no illusions that I would be able to just pick up a horn after 29 years and sound like I did at my best%2C or even my not-so-best. I entirely expected to suck%2C and to do so for quite some time. This presents a problem%2C because one of my worst psychological quirks is the fact that %5Bi%5DI hate being bad at things%5B%2Fi%5D%2C to the point where I would very much rather just not do them if that%27s the alternative.%0D%0A%0D%0ABut%2C dang it... I miss it. Even though I%27m not in a band%2C have no prospect of ever %5Bi%5Dbeing%5B%2Fi%5D in a band%2C and really don%27t want the logistical %5Bi%5Dtsuris%5B%2Fi%5D of all that anyway%2C and even though the euphonium is not what you would call a radiantly soloist-oriented instrument%2C I miss being able to Do the Thing. In some other world where I was less risk-averse about my career prospects%2C and%2For forewarned that they would be a smoldering shambles anyway for most of my adult life%2C I would have gone somewhere with a proper music program%2C possibly even majoring in music. I might even have learned to play the piano%2C too.%0D%0A%0D%0AOh yes%2C the piano. We%27ll get to that some other time as well.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo%2C anyway%2C kind of a shaggy dog story because that%27s as far as it goes%3A I bought an old euphonium%2C which I am terrible at playing%2C and which my ag%C3%A8d and decrepit body finds tiring even to play badly for more than 15 or 20 minutes at a time. But I%27m giving it a go%2C anyway%2C and may the gods have mercy on my neighbors.%0D%0A%0D%0ANOTE%3A I am not going to be putting my efforts on YouTube. I%27m not that brave. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A%5Bfont size%3D%222%22%5D%2A Katahdin Avenue had what they called %22the All-Purpose Room%22%2C which was just a big empty bit of the basement%2C and for the first couple of years I was a student at that school%2C they tried to do PE in there. Trouble was%2C it wasn%27t quite an empty room%2C because the building dated to the 1920s and they hadn%27t really worked out how to have big basement rooms in brick buildings without a support column every 10 feet or so. Have you ever tried to hold a gym class in grades K-5 in a room that has a reinforced concrete pillar every 10 feet%3F Even with ridiculous padding wrapped around all the columns%2C it didn%27t go well. Like%2C at all. They stopped doing it partway through my third-grade year.%0D%0A%0D%0A%2A%2A Actually this is only semi-true. I did buy a new-construction trombone recently%2C which I%27ll get into in another post later on%2C and it was %5Bi%5Djunk%5B%2Fi%5D. I admit I%27m not exactly a concert-grade trombonist myself any longer%2C but even so%2C trombones should not feel so flimsy you%27re afraid you might break them trying to put them together%2C and this thing did. It went back to the seller %5Bi%5Dtour de suite%5B%2Fi%5D and I%27m trying again.%5B%2Ffont%5D%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D.
