The bruises elsewhere on my body %28including one that goes almost all the way around my upper left arm%21%29 are starting to fade%2C but the black eye has set up its own retirement account at this point.%0D%0A%0D%0AThen I used a lot of unscheduled spoons on the rewrite of OWaW 21%2C which I don%27t regret%2C but it wasn%27t in the budget%2C so to speak.%0D%0A%0D%0AThen we got a ridiculously early first major snowstorm of the year%2C with the kind of wet snow that turns into concrete when it lands%2C and the power went out at 9%3A30 on Saturday night and stayed out for 13 hours.  As a CPAP user%2C I can%27t sleep when the power is out%2C so that completely fucked my sleep schedule%2C which%2C as you can tell from the time stamp on this post%2C is already not amazing.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe power came back on around 10%3A30 Sunday morning%2C and I crashed at once.  That afternoon%2C after I emerged from a stint in the comatorium%2C I noticed my DSL was down.  We covered this elsewhere.  That took until Tuesday evening to get fixed.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnnoyed about the power outage%2C I went to my CPAP supplier and finally ordered one of those expensive battery packs that connect to the CPAP machine%27s AC power supply and work like a UPS for the machine if the outlet power is cut off.  It cost 375 bucks--more than the CPAP machine itself--and took a few days to arrive%2C but when it did%2C it was simple to set up%2C and the relief was real.  No more sleepless power outages for ME.%0D%0A%0D%0AToday I had a long-dreaded online meeting with my new graduate advisor %28you may recall that my original one died last month%29 about the utter and complete lack of progress I%27ve made on my MA thesis since April%2C when%2C in my judgment%2C it became too dangerous to go to the University library and do research.  That didn%27t actually go anywhere near as poorly as I was dreading--she%27s a very nice lady--although I%27m not 100%25 sure that I won%27t face some kind of administrative censure for my lack of academic progress anyway%2C on a level above her.%0D%0A%0D%0AOne thing that did come out of the meeting is that%2C since it%27s looking like the coast won%27t be clear to go back to the library for lengthy research purposes until sometime after this academic year%2C we decided I would abandon the thesis track and switch to a master%27s by coursework.  I need five more credits to complete it that way%2C which I can get by taking one more %28online%29 course in the spring semester and doing a guided bibliography project%2C either concurrently with the course or in the interim %28the so-called %22winter term%22%29.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo I have a plan%2C and a road map to completing my MA next May%2C but it means abandoning the work I did manage to get done before everything fell apart%2C unless I want to either hold it in reserve as the seed of a PhD thesis or maybe try to turn it into a paper for publication or a book.  Either way%2C it%27s kind of a bummer%2C and the meeting was pretty draining.%0D%0A%0D%0AFollowing this%2C I called my father to let him know about the change of academic plans%2C and he told me he%27d been up to Presque Isle to visit my 90-year-old grandfather in the nursing home up there.  He wasn%27t allowed in%2C of course%2C he had to stand outside the window and... I don%27t know%2C Gramp%27s deaf%2C so presumably hold up a sign or something.  He then dropped two pertinent facts I hadn%27t been aware of%2C to wit%3A%0D%0A%0D%0A1%29 Because of his Alzheimer%27s%2C Gramp can%27t remember why no one is allowed to visit him%2C and whenever he forgets the reason why%2C he gets the idea that it%27s because the whole family has died and he%27s the only one left.  He%27s always relieved when Dad or my aunt Dot stop by the window and demonstrate that they are%2C in fact%2C alive%2C but then he forgets again soon after they leave.  So he spends almost all his time convinced that everyone he%27s ever loved is dead %28including me%2C presumably%29.  I wish I didn%27t know that.%0D%0A%0D%0A2%29 The virus has arrived in the nursing home%2C evidently because some fuckstick on the staff caught it on Thanksgiving and brought it to work.  %5Bi%5DWho could have imagined something like %5Bb%5Dthat%5B%2Fb%5D happening%3F%5B%2Fi%5D  They%27ve had two dozen cases and two deaths among the patients so far--all in the ward my grandfather isn%27t on%2C fortunately%2C but who knows how long that%27ll last%3F%0D%0A%0D%0A%28A bit weirdly%2C despite the fact that he%27s there because he has dementia%2C he%27s not on the dementia ward but is instead a general nursing patient.  Apparently%2C since he still knows who and where he is even though he forgets basically everything else that happens on a day-to-day basis and so can%27t be trusted to look after himself%2C he%27s not demented %5Bi%5Denough%5B%2Fi%5D for the dementia ward.%29%0D%0A%0D%0ASo%2C all in all%2C not one of my favorite phone conversations I%27ve had this month.%0D%0A%0D%0ABut wait%21  There%27s more%21%0D%0A%0D%0AJust now%2C as I was getting ready for bed%2C the surge protector my CPAP machine%27s power supply is connected to got accidentally switched off... and the instant that happened%2C the battery unit audibly went %5Bi%5Dfzzzt%5B%2Fi%5D and emitted the distinctive scent of fried electronics.%0D%0A%0D%0ACan I just pause for a moment to stress that %5Bi%5Dthis is exactly the circumstance those things are %5Bb%5Dfor%5B%2Fb%5D%5B%2Fi%5D--taking over when the AC power to the CPAP machine%27s power supply is suddenly cut off.  The very thing that gives those devices a %5Bi%5Dreason to exist%5B%2Fi%5D happened%2C and the device%27s immediate response was to burn out.  The CPAP machine wasn%27t even %5Bi%5Drunning%5B%2Fi%5D.  There was no load beyond the minuscule amount of power needed to light up the standby LED.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%27ve already emailed the outfit I bought it from requesting an RMA.
