On the way home%2C I hit a foreign object that was %5Bi%5Duncannily%5B%2Fi%5D disguised as a road marking and instantly destroyed both wheels on the driver%27s side of the vehicle.  Both rims are%2C as I believe the technical terms goes%2C bent all to fuck.%0D%0A%0D%0AGiven that I hit whatever it was at 75 miles an hour in the passing lane and both tires on the driver%27s side went %5Bi%5Dinstantly%5B%2Fi%5D flat%2C I%27m mildly impressed that I managed to get back across the highway and to a stop in the breakdown lane%2C as opposed to spearing off across the median or slewing into some other vehicle%2C but even so%2C I%27m not feeling great about myself right now.  I mean%2C shit.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn my defense%2C whatever I hit was yellow%2C rectangular%2C and lying at a right angle to and touching the equally yellow stripe at the lefthand side of the road.  from the brief look at it I got before I ran over it%2C my brain didn%27t have the %5Bi%5Dslightest%5B%2Fi%5D suspicion that it was anything other than some kind of transverse hash mark on the road--which the DOT does put on there occasionally%2C as some kind of metering mark or something%2C not sure what the purpose is.  The fact that it was a three-dimensional object solid and heavy enough to wreck alloy rims on impact was such a surprise that it took me a good few seconds to parse what the fuck had even happened%2C once I finished wrestling the truck to the opposite shoulder and got it stopped.%0D%0A%0D%0AAt first%2C thanks to misreading the message that the TPMS computer threw%2C I thought all %5Bi%5Dfour%5B%2Fi%5D tires were flat%2C which was even more confusing.  While I was waiting for AAA%2C I called the state police%2C not because I particularly needed police assistance%2C but because I thought they might want to have a look for whatever the hell I hit.  When they arrived%2C they said they hadn%27t seen anything%2C so hopefully I punted it into the median.  Certainly none of the other traffic streaking past while I was stuck there waiting seemed to have encountered anything that inconvenienced them.%0D%0A%0D%0AAlso in the %22what the hell was your brain even doing%3F%22 department%3A two state troopers and I replaced the front wheel with the spare%2C walking past the rear wheel on that side repeatedly in the process%2C and %5Bi%5Dnot once%5B%2Fi%5D did any of the three of us register that that tire was also flat.  I didn%27t notice until I had limped a couple of miles to a gas station at the next exit%2C where I planned to air up the spare.   And yes%2C that does mean I had to call AAA and uncancel my tow request%2C which I had canceled after the state troopers and I changed the first wheel.  At least that gas station was a safer place to wait for the tow truck than the side of the Interstate...%0D%0A%0D%0AFuck.  Those wheels are really fucking expensive.
