It%27s 126%C2%BD hours long%2C which makes it by FAR the longest title in my library%2C nearly doubling the previous record holder %28Burrows and Wallace%27s %5Bi%5DGotham%3A A History of New York City to 1898%5B%2Fi%5D%2C 67%3A25%29. I%27m about 20 hours into it%2C and I%27ve noticed some oddities about the narration.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn general it%27s quite good. The narrator%2C one Charlton Griffin%2C has a stentorian voice and an English accent%2C both of which go well with a tone as magisterial as Gibbon%27s. But every now and then%2C he commits what I can only describe as vocal typos. Faults crop up in the text that read uncannily like OCR errors%2C and Griffin just... says them%2C without batting an eyelash or missing a beat%2C even though they%27re clearly not what should be there.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe best one of those I%27ve come across in %5Bi%5DDecline and Fall%5B%2Fi%5D so far is a passage in which%2C after a series of civil wars and succession conflicts %28of which the Roman Empire had approximately one per week for 500 years%29%2C the weary citizens had a chance to enjoy %22the clam of peace.%22%0D%0A%0D%0ANow%2C that %5Bi%5Dcannot%5B%2Fi%5D be what Gibbon intended to have there%2C as enjoyable as the image of ancient Romans venerating the Clam of Peace is%2C but neither Griffin nor his producer%28s%29 even noticed it. I would say this is strange%2C but as you know%2C I%27ve done some amateur audiobook work myself%2C so I know that you get into a sort of trance sometimes where what%27s coming out of your mouth genuinely does not pass through all of your brain first.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway%2C it kind of makes me wonder if he really was working from an OCR scan of the book%2C and if so%2C why the heck%3F%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A%5Bfont size%3D%222%22%5D%22Ave%2C praetor. That%27s about as long as the audiobook of %5Bi%5DLeviathan Wakes%5B%2Fi%5D%2C which is the first book of the %5Bi%5DExpanse%5B%2Fi%5D series that currently sits at 9 books %28if one excludes side stories and novellas%29.
