Who's Who in the BC Universe

THE SCARLET SENTINEL

Artwork by Dave Menard

Personal Data
Alter Ego: Leonard Moreau
Occupation: Professional adventurer
Marital Status: Single
Group Affiliation: Partner of Arsenal
Base of Operations: New Avalon, Zeta Cygni
First Appearance: TOP THRILLS COMICS #1
Height: 5'9" Weight: 180 lbs.
Eyes: Blue Hair: Brown

History
Len Moreau is a third-generation super-hero. The first Scarlet Sentinel was his grandfather, Benjamin, who discovered the magic ring and lantern in a cave during his Army training in the early 1950s. Unfortunately, Ben Moreau's career as the Scarlet Sentinel was cut short by the Eisenhower administration's anti-vigilante policies before it could really get going, and after only a few adventures, he, like most of the era's mystery men, retired.

The second Scarlet Sentinel was Ben's son Paul, who tried out the ring during the resurgence of superhero activity in the early 1970s. In his third outing, he was nearly killed by one of his father's enemies, the psychotic killer Gallowglass. With thoughts of his young family and his prospects for the future in mind, he gave up heroing.

Paul's son Len was left to discover his family's ill-starred but heroic heritage as a teenager in the late 1980s: he found the lantern and ring in a box in his grandfather's garage and, upon asking, was told the whole story. With his grandfather's blessing, Len took the lantern and ring back home with him and started operating as the family's third Scarlet Sentinel.

The third Scarlet Sentinel's career proved much longer and more successful than either of his predecessors'. By his mid-twenties, he was a well-established and well-respected super-hero. Younger and more approachable than most of the other heroes of his generation, he became friendly with several of the younger hero groups that popped up in the mid-to-late 1990s, and eventually ended up taking on a partner - the teenage archer known as Arrowette, who changed her name to Arsenal shortly after she and the Scarlet Sentinel made their partnership official.

About a year after they teamed up, the Scarlet Sentinel and Arsenal were caught in a massive temporal displacement during the "Neo Hour" incident and found themselves flung into the twenty-fifth century. Undaunted, they settled in New Avalon and continue to battle crime and injustice today.

Powers & Weapons
The Scarlet Sentinel's powers all stem from his magic ring, which generates a form of psychokinetic energy. Using this energy, the Sentinel can fly, project a force-field to protect himself and others from harm, fire powerful bolts of destructive energy, manipulate objects telekinetically, protect himself and others from the pressures of the deep or the vacuum of space, and create interstellar jumpgates through hyperspace.

The Scarlet Sentinel's power ring is ineffective against objects made of glass. It must be periodically recharged by touching it against a larger gem which is disguised as the glass globe in a Handlan & Buck railway lantern. The duration a charge lasts is determined by the intensity of use. An average charge will last about a week.

When charging his ring, the Scarlet Sentinel recites the following oath:

I challenge all things dark and fell,
I'm Evil's bane and Crime's death-knell.
I fight for Truth and Right as well;
I am the Scarlet Sentinel!

Moreau keeps reasonably fit and has had some training in hand-to-hand combat, mostly from Arsenal. He is an experienced and clever fighter, and can look after himself without his ring better than many opponents expect.

The Scarlet Sentinel created by Benjamin D. Hutchins; the Sentinel's Oath by Hutchins & Kris Overstreet; Scarlet Sentinel logo created by John Trussell from a concept by Hutchins

ARSENAL

Artwork by Dave Menard

Personal Data
Alter Ego: Susan "Cissie" Jones
Occupation: Professional adventurer
Marital Status: Single
Group Affiliation: Partner of the Scarlet Sentinel
Base of Operations: New Avalon, Zeta Cygni
First Appearance: IMPULSE #28 (DC, 1997)
Height: 5'7" Weight: 116 lbs.
Eyes: Blue Hair: Blonde

History
Cissie King-Jones never really wanted to be a super-hero; it was her mother, Bonnie King, an Olympic archery medalist, Green Arrow fan-girl, and general super-hero wanna-be, whose career had been sidetracked by a repetitive stress injury, who insisted that her daughter would be the hero she never managed to become. She trained Cissie relentlessly throughout her childhood, foisted the name "Arrowette" on her, then dropped her like a bomb on the super-heroic scene, nearly getting her killed in the process.

Mother and daughter were separated by child welfare authorities after Cissie's disastrous debut, but Cissie had the bug by then, and found herself unwilling to hang up her bow. Fortunately, she fell in with a good crowd, ending up as a member of a teen hero group called Young Justice. Having friends "in the game", so to speak, helped to stabilize her life and also gave her solid backup in the field.

As a member of Young Justice, Cissie became friendly with the Scarlet Sentinel, one of the youngest members of the previous generation of super-heroes and one of the only "grown-up" heroes who not only approved of Young Justice but preferred hanging with them to dealing with the more mature teams. Arrowette and the Scarlet Sentinel worked together off and on, but didn't officially team up until an adventure that involved rescuing Arrowette's mother from a deranged scientist who had taken over the mental hospital where she was a patient.

Aghast that her daughter had been seen in public working with what she considered a "B-list" super-hero, Bonnie King declared that "no daughter of mine is going to be labeled the sidekick to this two-bit knockoff." In response, Cissie dropped the "King" from her name and severed all remaining connection with her mother. Shortly thereafter, to distance herself further from her mother's influence, she expanded her weapons skills beyond archery and reinvented herself as Arsenal.

Arsenal has no super-powers, instead relying on her near-supreme skill. She is a master martial artist, possibly the greatest archer in the galaxy, and well-versed with many other ranged and melee weapons as well. She has an uncanny sense of aim, which makes her capable of hitting targets normal people would consider impossible - put simply, she never misses what she aims at.

As her name implies, Arsenal is a walking arsenal. Her bulletproof, blaster-resistant costume features holsters, pouches, and hidden compartments for a myriad of weapons, from her signature collapsible compound bow to grapple guns, darts, throwing irons, shuriken, knives, mini-grenades, a wrist crossbow, billy clubs, and even a small blaster. Her boots feature retractable spikes for climbing or extra damage in combat, and the knuckles of her gloves are weighted. She carries a wide selection of arrows, which range from hunting broadheads to various trick arrows, which she is constantly refining and redeveloping.

Arsenal is also an accomplished acrobat with an excellent sense of balance and body position, and has no apparent fear of heights.

Arrowette created by Tom Peyer and developed into Arsenal by Benjamin D. Hutchins (after Peter David and Devin Grayson)

"Neo Hour"? Is this a tale that's been told and I just didn't catch it, or one that we have to wait to hear?

It's a riff on Huge Summer Comics Crossovers (most specifically DC's "Zero Hour", but the genre in general as well).

Obviously you're not a real Bacon Bit (a fan of Bacon comics), or you'd know.

As always, these are excellent entries, though I hope the artist isn't about to burn out...

Nope. The Chibi's in school now, so I have still more free time. What I can't handle, I'll farm off to my DC on New Avalon- he's better than I am, but you might have to wait a while to hear back from him- making deadlines through that interdimensional barrier's a bitch.

If you got eight Bacon Bits together at a convention, would that
be a Bacon Byte?

Seriously, these two entries are facinating, and it sort of makes
you wonder how and why the bad guys back on Earth are even TRYING
to fight back, if the good guys have this much power on their side.

I mean, does being Evil (with a capital E) somehow damage the reality
lobe of the brain? Because there are just some fights you look at,
and you have to say "Nope. Ain't worth the ass-kicking I'm gonna
get. Dunno about you guys, but I'm heading for the local pub for
a short beer. You wanna fight them, be my guest. I'll visit you in
the prison hospital later."

What you may have missed is that these two characters, at least, are meta-fictional; that is, they exist in UF only as comic-book heroes.

(... unlike all the OTHER comic-book heroes who have recently been tossed into the mix.)

Unless I miss my guess, the Deadpool series from Marvel pokes fun at this extensively. Pick a couple up, they're fun. Or not, it's up to you.

So, in the UFverse, Derek Bacon managed to buy out DC Comics? Or is this just one of these things we shouldn't examine too closely?

I think he started his own comic house during the Golden Age... Valiant Rose (I think) touches on this briefly in the scene where Imra discovers comics from Wakaba...

Mm, I remember that discussion, but since Ben mentioned the Young Justice gang in the Arsenal entry, I thought a buyout must have happened- after all, YJ included (at least in our universe) various sidekicks of rather famous DC properties. Buyouts aren't unusual in the biz, after all- that's how DC ended up with the SHAZAM characters, as well as all the old Charlton and Atlas heroes. Well, if he did indeed buy 'em, more power to him, anyway.
