The first Scarlet Sentinel was his grandfather%2C Benjamin%2C who discovered the magic ring and lantern in a cave during his Army training in the early 1950s. Unfortunately%2C Ben Moreau%27s career as the Scarlet Sentinel was cut short by the Eisenhower administration%27s anti-vigilante policies before it could really get going%2C and after only a few adventures%2C he%2C like most of the era%27s mystery men%2C retired.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe second Scarlet Sentinel was Ben%27s son Paul%2C who tried out the ring during the resurgence of superhero activity in the early 1970s. In his third outing%2C he was nearly killed by one of his father%27s enemies%2C the psychotic killer Gallowglass. With thoughts of his young family and his prospects for the future in mind%2C he gave up heroing.%0D%0A%0D%0APaul%27s son Len was left to discover his family%27s ill-starred but heroic heritage as a teenager in the late 1980s%3A he found the lantern and ring in a box in his grandfather%27s garage and%2C upon asking%2C was told the whole story. With his grandfather%27s blessing%2C Len took the lantern and ring back home with him and started operating as the family%27s third Scarlet Sentinel.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe third Scarlet Sentinel%27s career proved much longer and more successful than either of his predecessors%27.  By his mid-twenties%2C he was a well-established and well-respected super-hero.  Younger and more approachable than most of the other heroes of his generation%2C he became friendly with several of the younger hero groups that popped up in the mid-to-late 1990s%2C and eventually ended up taking on a partner - the teenage archer known as %5Bi%5DArrowette%5B%2Fi%5D%2C who changed her name to %5Bi%5DArsenal%5B%2Fi%5D shortly after she and the Scarlet Sentinel made their partnership official.%0D%0A%0D%0AAbout a year after they teamed up%2C the Scarlet Sentinel and Arsenal were caught in a massive temporal displacement during the %22Neo Hour%22 incident and found themselves flung into the twenty-fifth century.  Undaunted%2C they settled in New Avalon and continue to battle crime and injustice today.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DPowers %26 Weapons%5B%2Fb%5D%0D%0AThe Scarlet Sentinel%27s powers all stem from his magic ring%2C which generates a form of psychokinetic energy. Using this energy%2C the Sentinel can fly%2C project a force-field to protect himself and others from harm%2C fire powerful bolts of destructive energy%2C manipulate objects telekinetically%2C protect himself and others from the pressures of the deep or the vacuum of space%2C and create interstellar jumpgates through hyperspace.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe Scarlet Sentinel%27s power ring is ineffective against objects made of glass. It must be periodically recharged by touching it against a larger gem which is disguised as the glass globe in a Handlan %26 Buck railway lantern.  The duration a charge lasts is determined by the intensity of use. An average charge will last about a week.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhen charging his ring%2C the Scarlet Sentinel recites the following oath%3A%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5DI challenge all things dark and fell%2C%0D%0AI%27m Evil%27s bane and Crime%27s death-knell.%0D%0AI fight for Truth and Right as well%3B%0D%0AI am the Scarlet Sentinel%21%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A%0D%0AMoreau keeps reasonably fit and has had some training in hand-to-hand combat%2C mostly from Arsenal. She trained Cissie relentlessly throughout her childhood%2C foisted the name %22Arrowette%22 on her%2C then dropped her like a bomb on the super-heroic scene%2C nearly getting her killed in the process.%0D%0A%0D%0AMother and daughter were separated by child welfare authorities after Cissie%27s disastrous debut%2C but Cissie had the bug by then%2C and found herself unwilling to hang up her bow.  Fortunately%2C she fell in with a good crowd%2C ending up as a member of a teen hero group called %5Bi%5DYoung Justice%5B%2Fi%5D.  Having friends %22in the game%22%2C so to speak%2C helped to stabilize her life and also gave her solid backup in the field.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs a member of Young Justice%2C Cissie became friendly with %5Bi%5Dthe Scarlet Sentinel%5B%2Fi%5D%2C one of the youngest members of the previous generation of super-heroes and one of the only %22grown-up%22 heroes who not only approved of Young Justice but preferred hanging with them to dealing with the more mature teams.  Arrowette and the Scarlet Sentinel worked together off and on%2C but didn%27t officially team up until an adventure that involved rescuing Arrowette%27s mother from a deranged scientist who had taken over the mental hospital where she was a patient.%0D%0A%0D%0AAghast that her daughter had been seen in public working with what she considered a %22B-list%22 super-hero%2C Bonnie King declared that %22no daughter of mine is going to be labeled the sidekick to this two-bit knockoff.%22  In response%2C Cissie dropped the %22King%22 from her name and severed all remaining connection with her mother.  Shortly thereafter%2C to distance herself further from her mother%27s influence%2C she expanded her weapons skills beyond archery and reinvented herself as %5Bi%5DArsenal%5B%2Fi%5D.%0D%0A%0D%0AAbout a year after they teamed up%2C the Scarlet Sentinel and Arsenal were caught in a massive temporal displacement during the %22Neo Hour%22 incident and found themselves flung into the twenty-fifth century. She is a master martial artist%2C possibly the greatest archer in the galaxy%2C and well-versed with many other ranged and melee weapons as well.  She has an uncanny sense of aim%2C which makes her capable of hitting targets normal people would consider impossible - put simply%2C she never misses what she aims at.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs her name implies%2C Arsenal is a walking arsenal.  Her bulletproof%2C blaster-resistant costume features holsters%2C pouches%2C and hidden compartments for a myriad of weapons%2C from her signature collapsible compound bow to grapple guns%2C darts%2C throwing irons%2C shuriken%2C knives%2C mini-grenades%2C a wrist crossbow%2C billy clubs%2C and even a small blaster.  Her boots feature retractable spikes for climbing or extra damage in combat%2C and the knuckles of her gloves are weighted.  She carries a wide selection of arrows%2C which range from hunting broadheads to various trick arrows%2C which she is constantly refining and redeveloping.%0D%0A%0D%0AArsenal is also an accomplished acrobat with an excellent sense of balance and body position%2C and has no apparent fear of heights.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bsmall%5D%5Bi%5DArrowette created by Tom Peyer and developed into Arsenal by Benjamin D. Buyouts aren%27t unusual in the biz%2C after all- that%27s how DC ended up with the SHAZAM characters%2C as well as all the old Charlton and Atlas heroes.
