No one could have dreamed we were being scrutinized%2C as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets. And yet%2C across the gulf of space%2C minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes%2C and slowly and surely they drew their plans against us.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0AAt midnight%2C on the twelfth of August%2C a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across two hundred million miles of void%2C invisibly hurtling towards us%2C came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. As I watched%2C there was another jet of gas. It was another missile%2C starting on its way.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd that%27s how it was for the next ten nights. Suddenly the top began moving - rotating - unscrewing%2C and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside trying to escape.
