Many of those smaller ships do %28or did%29 exist in the UF universe.  For instance%2C I have an uncompleted story fragment kicking around featuring an appearance by a %5Bi%5DSaladin%5B%2Fi%5D-class destroyer %28which you may have seen in %5Bi%5DStarfleet Command%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and which in UF is in service with the WDF and Starfleet%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AThat said%2C the %5Bi%5DSurprise%5B%2Fi%5D class isn%27t directly based on any of them.  As the latest in the IPSF%27s %22Next Generation Warship%22 series%2C it%27s basically a smaller %5Bi%5DSovereign%5B%2Fi%5D%3A It has a distinct family resemblance%2C as far as things like the styling of the warp nacelles and vents and whatnot go%2C but the ship as a whole is smaller and hasn%27t much%2C if any%2C of a secondary hull - just a slight squaring-off and thickening abaft the bridge%2C with the warp engines mounted directly to the main hull.  Kind of a cross between the %5Bi%5DSovereign%5B%2Fi%5D- and %5Bi%5DDefiant%5B%2Fi%5D-class designs%2C albeit smaller than the one and larger than the other. I thought it looked better recessed there. %0D%0A%0D%0AThat does look good %28and it%27s consistent with those round openings on the front of the saucer in TOS-era diagrams%2C even though those probably aren%27t supposed to be torpedo tubes%29.
