Many of those smaller ships do %28or did%29 exist in the UF universe. For instance%2C I have an uncompleted story fragment kicking around featuring an appearance by a %5Bi%5DSaladin%5B%2Fi%5D-class destroyer %28which you may have seen in %5Bi%5DStarfleet Command%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and which in UF is in service with the WDF and Starfleet%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AThat said%2C the %5Bi%5DSurprise%5B%2Fi%5D class isn%27t directly based on any of them.
