Like every member of her species%2C she had never seen an%0D%0Aactual quarian town - only holos of what they%27d looked like centuries%0D%0Aago%2C on Rannoch or Venachar%2C Lubnaig or Haestrom%2C or one of the other%0D%0Along-lost worlds of the ancient Rannoch Hegemony. The permanent%0D%0Astructures of Halo Test Settlement One had been built by combined teams%0D%0Aof quarian engineers and human contractors based on those holos and what%0D%0Afew architectural records remained from the era before the Evacuation.%0D%0A As such%2C it had a slightly artificial feel%2C like a movie set or%0D%0Aan idealized version of the Old Country in a theme park on some ex-%0D%0Acolony world. And as the Halo Acclimation Project had progressed and%0D%0Athe test groups had spent longer and longer in the town%2C it had grown%0D%0Aand evolved%2C starting to take on a unique idiom all its own%2C one%0D%0Ainfluenced by the style of the structures that had stood on Halo%27s%0D%0Asurface for millennia before the quarians came. There was nowhere else%0D%0Ain the galaxy quite like Soluston.%0D%0A Tali walked down the settlement%27s main street. The place seemed%0D%0Aparticularly strange now%2C for the simple reason that it was largely%0D%0Adeserted%3B the Acclimation Project was between phases right now%2C testing%0D%0Ahaving been suspended for the winter%2C and the new spring%27s first group%0D%0Aof volunteers wouldn%27t arrive for another two weeks. That made it seem%0D%0Aa bit like she had always imagined the towns on Rannoch would be now%2C%0D%0Aeerie and empty. Did the geth live in the cities they%27d driven their%0D%0Acreators out of%3F Did they have any understanding of the architecture%2C%0D%0Aknow what the monuments stood for - did they have any feelings at all%0D%0Aabout the people they%27d displaced all those centuries ago%3F She%27d always%0D%0Awondered.%0D%0A She shook her head%2C banishing the reverie. She had no time to%0D%0Amuse on the geth right now%3B she was here for a very particular reason.%0D%0A There was one house in Soluston that was unlike all the others.%0D%0AWhere the rest of the town - particularly the Science Center%2C the grand%0D%0Abuilding that stood at its center and housed all the research efforts -%0D%0Awas built in duracrete and glass%2C in that odd fusion of classical%0D%0Aquarian and native Halo styles%2C the house called %28for reasons that%0D%0Aeluded most quarians%29 Spare 14 was a simple plastalloy colony prefab%2C%0D%0Aknown throughout human space %28for reasons that also eluded most%0D%0Aquarians%29 as an IKEA. Actually%2C it was two of them%2C because it had an%0D%0Aattached garage that was made of another%2C identical shell that had been%0D%0Afitted with a larger door and no interior walls.%0D%0A This house was unique not only because it didn%27t match anything%0D%0Aelse in town%2C but also because it had stood there -before- the town. It%0D%0Awas a relic of the previous settlement to stand on the site%2C a human%0D%0Afarming colony called Goodyear. Nowadays%2C it was the private retreat of%0D%0Athe only quarian to have lived in Goodyear%2C whose house it had been in%0D%0Athose days as well.%0D%0A And it was where Tali%27Zorah was bound%2C because that quarian%0D%0Ahappened to be her grandmother.%0D%0A She knocked at the door - no doorchime in a structure as basic%0D%0Aas this - and was admitted a few moments later by that grandmother%2C who%0D%0Agreeted her with a hug and ushered her inside.%0D%0A An observer would have been hard-pressed to tell the two women%0D%0Aapart%2C and not only because they were both quarians%2C anonymous in their%0D%0Afull-body environment suits and semi-reflec helmet visors. At%0D%0Aseventeen%2C Tali was as tall as her grandmother%2C and they had the same%0D%0Aslim%2C athletic build%2C honed by hours of diligent training. Their voices%0D%0Aeven sounded similar - enough so that%2C with a little effort%2C Tali had%0D%0Aoccasionally been able to fool her father into thinking he was talking%0D%0Ato his mother%2C not his daughter.%0D%0A Tali%27s grandmother%27s name was also Tali%2C which occasionally made%0D%0Afor confusion in its own right. Tali%27Shukra vel Halo - Tali the Elder%2C%0D%0Aas she was known around the fleet - was quite a famous woman in the%0D%0AQuarian Union. She was widely%2C if a bit inaccurately%2C acclaimed as the%0D%0Adiscoverer of Halo%2C and had led the efforts to understand the quarian%0D%0Apeople%27s most curious possession for quite a lot longer than Tali the%0D%0AYounger had been alive.%0D%0A %22Well%2C well%2C well%2C%22 said Tali%27Shukra%2C stepping back to look her%0D%0Agranddaughter over. %22So the day has finally come. You must be%0D%0Aexcited.%22 She shook her head. %22Listen to me. I%27m saying exactly the%0D%0Asame ridiculous things your great-grandmother said to me when I was%0D%0Aleaving on -my- pilgrimage.%22%0D%0A Tali%27Zorah shrugged. %22Tradition is important%2C%22 she said%2C gently%0D%0Amocking one of her father%27s favorite pronouncements.%0D%0A Tali%27Shukra laughed. %22That it is%2C%22 she agreed. %22Come with me.%0D%0AI have something for you.%22 She led the way around the half-partition%0D%0Athat served to sketch in the house%27s tiny vestibule and into the living%0D%0Aroom.%0D%0A It always amazed Tali%27Zorah how homey her grandmother had%0D%0Amanaged to make this dingy little prefab. She should%27ve expected it -%0D%0Ait was a quarian national gift%2C the ability to make the drabbest%2C most%0D%0Acramped living space into a warm and welcoming home - but it somehow%0D%0Aseemed like a more vivid accomplishment in a human-built colony shelter%0D%0Athan in one of the warren-like habitation holds of a starship.%0D%0ACenturies of living on the move had made the quarians a ruthlessly%0D%0Aunsentimental people when it came to material possessions%2C but their%0D%0Aplace in the quarian heart was usually occupied with a vengeance by%0D%0Aholograms and photographs%2C and Tali%27Shukra was no different. The living%0D%0Aroom walls%2C like those of her quarters aboard the Archangel before this%2C%0D%0Awere like a summary of her life in carefully selected still images.%0D%0A The younger Tali%27s attention was pulled away from the pictures%0D%0Aby the sight of what lay%2C neatly laid out%2C on the low table in the%0D%0Amiddle of the room. It was an encounter suit%2C not unlike the ones they%0D%0Aboth wore%2C but obviously of higher quality than the standard model%0D%0ATali%27Zorah was wearing. Which is not to say that hers was poorly made%3B%0D%0Arather%2C the one laid out on the table was exquisite%2C with fittings and%0D%0Afabrics that had obviously been made%2C quite laboriously%2C by hand.%0D%0A %22This was my pilgrimage suit%2C%22 Tali%27Shukra explained%2C gesturing.%0D%0A%22Your great-great-grandfather%2C Kevirin%27Zorah%2C made it for me many years%0D%0Aago. She%27d always liked that about%0D%0Ahim.
