It comes from the %22cut%2C but happened%22 pile%2C having been removed from the story for length reasons and because its point of view is slightly cross-grained with the rest of the narrative. Compare those other-perspective short films the BBC have taken to putting out before selected %5Bi%5DDoctor Who%5B%2Fi%5D episodes%2C which they will insist for some baffling reason on calling %22prequels%22 when they are clearly no such thing. --G.%26r%3B%5B%2Fsmall%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Btt%5D%5Bpre%5D WEDNESDAY%2C MARCH 17%2C 2410%0D%0A REPUBLIC CITY%2C DIQIU%0D%0A%0D%0A Emily Wong was one of only a very few Section 4 writers to take%0D%0Aher own photographs%2C and the only one who processed her own film. When%0D%0Aasked why%2C she would usually say that she found it relaxing%2C or that%0D%0Ashe%27d had to do so in her first job%2C at the perpetually cash-strapped%0D%0ADesert Bluffs Gazette%2C and the habit was now ingrained. The truth was%2C%0D%0Ashe just didn%27t trust the Tribune%27s photo editors%2C and besides%2C their%0D%0Alab wouldn%27t have known what to do with Minox film.%0D%0A So%2C after her brush-off from Watari Karasu %28which she was fairly%0D%0Asure wasn%27t his name%29 and Avatar Korra outside Narook%27s%2C she%27d walked%0D%0Ahome in a minor dudgeon and cleared her head in the little darkroom%0D%0Ashe%27d made out of a walk-in closet. She hadn%27t taken many photos at the%0D%0Anoodlery%2C not because she was worried about being discovered%2C but%0D%0Abecause she%27d started to feel like a voyeur. Occupational hazard in her%0D%0Aline of work%2C of course%2C but the feeling had been especially strong%0D%0Atonight.%0D%0A The whole odyssey with the mystery couple and the new Team%0D%0AAvatar had been a curious thing%2C but tonight it had plain gotten weird.%0D%0AThe mystery couple%2C so obviously honeymooning in town just days before%2C%0D%0Ahad evidently gone their separate ways. The woman with the pink hair%0D%0Awas at Kwong%27s%2C dressed as a man %28albeit obviously not trying to fool%0D%0Aanyone into thinking she was one%3B a strange style%2C but Emily had to%0D%0Aadmit she made it work%29%2C dining with another woman%2C identity entirely%0D%0Aunknown. And Watari Karasu%2C whoever he was%2C was down at Narook%27s%2C a%0D%0Aplace he obviously knew well and was comfortable in... dining with the%0D%0AAvatar.%0D%0A There were other people at the table with them%2C of course - two%0D%0Aof them were unknown to Emily%2C apart from the fact that she%27d seen them%0D%0Aat the group dinner at Chau%27s%2C and one was the firebender from the%0D%0ATemple Island Fire Ferrets bending team. Emily wasn%27t very interested%0D%0Ain them%2C though. Korra was the Fire Ferrets%27 franchise owner%2C had been%0D%0Afor an age%2C and her dining with one or all of them was in no way%0D%0Aunusual. The other two were obviously martial artists%2C which stood to%0D%0Areason if they were members of the new Team Avatar%2C and they weren%27t%0D%0Adoing anything that cried out to the reporter%27s instincts the way Karasu%0D%0Aand the Avatar were. Because whatever the other three women at that%0D%0Atable were doing%2C it was obvious to Emily Wong that -those- two were on%0D%0Aa -date.-%0D%0A She couldn%27t hear their conversation from over here %28and%0D%0Aprobably wouldn%27t have felt comfortable listening to it if she could%27ve%3B%0D%0Ashe did have limits%29%2C but from their body language as they chatted and%0D%0Alaughed with their tablemates%2C Emily felt she didn%27t really have to know%0D%0Athe words to recognize the song. They were plainly the sort of couple%0D%0Awho had a lot of inside jokes%2C and the kind of rapport that enabled them%0D%0Ato tell them instinctively. There was a lot of elbow-nudging and%0D%0Ashoulder-bumping going on over there%2C a lot of little touches %28in%0D%0Aparticular%2C she couldn%27t seem to keep her hands off his hair%29 and%0D%0Asmiling eye contacts%2C and the kind of laughter that came from shared%0D%0Aexperiences. And at one point there was some kind of competition%0D%0Ainvolving Super Noodle Bowls.%0D%0A For a person of Emily%27s age and education%2C seeing the Avatar%0D%0Aacting like a teenager with her first serious boyfriend had been more%0D%0Athan a little unnerving%2C and that was -before- you took into account the%0D%0Afact that the man involved was %28recently%21%29 married to someone else.%0D%0ANow%2C though%2C developing the few frames she had taken%2C she found%0D%0Asomething that turned all her expectations sideways on her%3A one frame so%0D%0Aaffecting she didn%27t even think of sharing it with her editor%2C let alone%0D%0Athe world at large. In it%2C Karasu had turned to address some cheerful%0D%0Aremark to the teenage swordswoman across the table from him%2C pointing%0D%0Ahis chopsticks at her. Turned that way%2C he couldn%27t see the look Korra%2C%0D%0Aright next to him%2C was giving him.%0D%0A That look had lasted for less than a second%2C so fleeting that%0D%0AEmily hadn%27t registered it herself while her minicamera was committing%0D%0Ait to film. Now%2C as she stood in her darkroom at home and watched the%0D%0Aghostly image resolve at the bottom of her developer tray%2C she realized%0D%0Athere was far more going on here than the usual crap she had to cover.%0D%0A She waited for the picture to develop fully%2C then tonged it out%0D%0Aand moved on down the line%2C taking comfort%2C as she always did%2C in the%0D%0Awell-worn rhythms of the ritual%3A stop bath%2C fixer%2C a final wash. Job%0D%0Adone%2C she hung the print up to dry and stood looking at it in the red%0D%0Aglow of her darkroom safety light%2C minutely examining the expression on%0D%0Athe Avatar%27s face as she glanced at the man sitting next to her.%0D%0A It was a loving look%2C yes%2C that much was unmistakable%3B but one%0D%0Aso sentimental%2C so... so -wistful- it was almost heartbreaking. That%0D%0Awasn%27t the face of a woman looking at her lover. Emily didn%27t know %0D%0A-what- it was.%0D%0A The realization%2C when it came%2C was like a slap to the back of%0D%0Athe head. Something -had- been going on over at that corner table%2C but%0D%0Ait wasn%27t the sordid little icon-with-feet-of-clay business Emily had%0D%0Aautomatically assumed it must be. She%27d been looking at Korra and%0D%0AKarasu from the perspective of - spirits help her - a society page hack%2C%0D%0Alooking for the drama. The sensational angle.%0D%0A The dirt.%0D%0A That fleeting instant of time%2C captured by the lens of her tiny%0D%0Acamera without the eye behind it consciously registered what they both%0D%0Ahad seen... that wasn%27t dirt. That was something else%2C something her%0D%0Ainstincts told her was more deeply personal than she had ever suspected.%0D%0A Emily shook herself%2C feeling vaguely unclean about what she had%0D%0Abelieved. %22Right%2C%22 she said to the drying photograph. %22It%27s time I%0D%0Aremembered how to be a reporter again.%22%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A Eyrie Productions%2C Unlimited%0D%0A will present%0D%0A%0D%0A Undocumented Features Future Imperfect%0D%0A Symphony of the Sword No. 5%0D%0A%0D%0A Seventh Movement%3A%0D%0A Taken By Storm%2C Part 3%0D%0A Goodbye and Hello%2C As Always%0D%0A%0D%0A sometime fairly soon%2C we hope%0D%0A%0D%0A%5B%2Fpre%5D%5B%2Ftt%5D 1|1|0|||1||RE%3A Prelude Trailer%3A S5M7-TbS3|JeanneHedge||21:03:13|11/08/2013|Looking forward to the next trailer %28or the full piece%2C whichever comes first%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd now I know who Emily Wong is - Lisa Vanette%2C 400 years on. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0AJeanne%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Btable border%3D%220%22 cellspacing%3D%220%22 cellpadding%3D%220%22 width%3D%2280%25%22%5D%5Btr%5D%5Btd colspan%3D%222%22%5D%5Bhr size%3D%221%22 noshade%5D%5B%2Ftd%5D%5Btr%5D%5Btd align%3D%22center%22 width%3D%2210%25%22%5Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.jhedge.com%2Fmisc%2Foldowl.jpg%5B%2Ftd%5D%5Btd%5D%5Bfont size%3D2%5D%5Bb%5DJeanne Hedge%5B%2Fb%5D%0D%0A%5Blink%3Awww.jhedge.com%7Chttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.jhedge.com%5D%5B%2Ffont%5D%5B%2Ftd%5D%5B%2Ftr%5D%5Btr%5D%5Btd colspan%3D%222%22%5D%5Bi%5D%5Bfont size%3D1%5D%22Never give up%2C never surrender%21%22%5B%2Ffont%5D%0D%0A%5B%2Fi%5D%5B%2Ftd%5D%5B%2Ftr%5D%5Btr%5D%5Btd colspan%3D%222%22%5D%5Bhr size%3D%221%22 noshade%5D%5B%2Ftd%5D%5B%2Ftr%5D%5B%2Ftable%5D 4|2|1|||||RE%3A Prelude Trailer%3A S5M7-TbS3|Proginoskes||18:57:20|11/15/2013|I%27m a fan of Bob Schroeck%27s %5Bi%5DDrunkard%27s Walk%5B%2Fi%5D and the sequel to DW5%2C Ian McLeod%27s %5Bi%5DDead Bang%5B%2Fi%5D%2C so despite never seeing any actual BGC I feel that you are absolutely correct. 2|1|0|||1||RE%3A Prelude Trailer%3A S5M7-TbS3|Mercutio||00:29:59|11/09/2013|Emily thinks Corwin is Korra%27s son now%2C doesn%27t she%3F%0D%0A%0D%0A... oh god.
