Long trestle tables%2C steel-legged with scarred%2C grime-stained wooden tops%2C held jumbled assortments of oily parts. The place was redolent with the mingled smells of coal smoke%2C heavy fuel oil%2C and lubricating grease. Above the desk%2C a ceiling fan on a long drive shaft hung from the ceiling%2C turning lazily and drawing an interesting vortex pattern in the cloud of smoke that filled the upper third of the office%27s volume.%0D%0A%0D%0AStanding behind the desk was the source of the smoke. She was a woman%2C dressed similarly to Y%C5%ABbari but for the dark grey color of her coverall%2C and the fact that she was wearing it all the way up%2C sleeves rolled%2C and had a worn leather welder%27s apron over it. Instead of a hardhat%2C she had a crumpled khaki U.S. Navy officer%27s cap%2C circa World War II%2C crammed down on her head. Akashi wondered whether the ponytail draped forward over her shoulder was really iron-grey%2C or just as dirty as her clothes.
