"Some anime, 2024 Q4"

Here I go again, listing some stuff I like.

My reputation exceeds me: Let This Grieving Soul Retire

Krai Andrey is a recent anime trope, the Weakest Hero. Except he isn't thrown out of his party; he tries to quit once he realizes he isn't able to adventure at the level his childhood friends are. Unfortunately for him, they respond by making him team leader. In hopes of convincing them to let him quit, he names their group Grieving Souls, suggesting that if they don't like it, he can leave the group. This does not work as planned.

He survives to level eight by collecting and making use of a ridiculous amount of magical relics, earning the nickname "Thousand Tricks," and getting an undeserved reputation as a genius adventurer. This is mainly the fault of his party, who really are overpowered sorts, talking him up like he's the best thing ever.

I listened to a read-through of the manga earlier this year, and it had enough of a hook that I was glad to see this one coming up.

The WOAT is a JOAT: The Healer Who Was Banished From His Party, Is, in Fact, the Strongest

Another version of the Weakest Hero, Raust is a healer who can learn only one spell - Heal. No area heal, no cure poison or cure disease, just Heal.

Because of this, he has a reputation as an ignoramus. He was kicked out of a party, spent several years training, joined a new party, and was kicked out after one mission.

Then a martial artist named Narsena comes along, forms a party with him, and discovers what those years taught Raust - including such useful skills as spotting traps, and the not-really-a-healer-skill of giving a monster's kidney an iron infusion.

The story of my wife: TsumaSho

Thirty years ago, Keisuke Nijima met Takae. They fell in love, married, and started raising their daughter, Mai.

Ten years ago, Takae Nijima died. Since then, Keisuke has been stumbling through life, existing rather than living. And that's when a ten-year old girl shows up, proves that she's the reincarnation of Takae, and proceeds to kick-start Keisuke and Mai into life again.

Money changes everything: Trillion Game

Haru and Gaku are schoolmates who formed a friendship when Haru saved Gaku from being mugged, and Gaku erased the video evidence of the fight that would have otherwise gotten Haru in trouble. Now, they're recent graduates.

Haru is a smooth-talking sort who makes me think of a meld of Faceman and Hannibal from the A-Team; his visible attributes are all about talking people into things, but he makes plans like he's six or seven responses ahead.

Gaku, on the other hand, is socially awkward, which hides his technological genius to the point that he can't get a job.

Haru's response to this is to form a business with Gaku doing something, get investors, and make a trillion dollars. This is not a business plan; it isn't even twelve percent of a business plan. But he's convinced he can do it...

Marriage or Alaska: 365 Days to the Wedding

A Japanese classic, the fake engagement, forms the core of this one. Takuya and Rika work at a travel agency. He's a homebody whose major interest is caring for the cat he rescued from the streets. She's a map-loving sort with Resting Grump Face.

And that's where it would end, except the agency is opening a new storefront in Alaska. In one year, somebody will be reassigned there, with preference being given to unmarried employees, in order to keep relocation costs down.

The basic arc is predictable - they'll fall in love in the course of pretending to be engaged. Sometimes it's more about seeing how the characters get there than being surprised by the destination.

The pauper is a princess: Nina the Starry Bride

Nina was orphaned in a plague, and has been making a living as a street thief. Then one of her friends sells her out to Prince Azure, and she's taken away to be the replacement for Princess Alisha. The princess died in a mysterious carriage accident, which presumably will be a thread to unravel later, but since she's been living in seclusion for most of her life, nobody knows what Alisha really looks like - just that she has stunning blue eyes.

This means that Nina is the best choice for replacement. She doesn't understand courtly manners, hasn't been trained as a priestess the way Alisha was, and doesn't really look like Alisha, but the eyes match, and she's actually female. Everything else can be faked, right?

This isn't everything; I have sixteen new series and three returnees on my watchlist. But I'm hoping for a conversation here...

As is my current viewing level, I'm only watching like 1 series a season max and usually require a link to something else to have chosen it. In this case, I'm watching SAO Alternative: GGO Season 2, as I watched Season 1 and I'm quietly a fairly big SAO fan. No complaints, this is mostly what I wanted going in, though I'm a little surprised they opted for no lead-in at all and straight into the battle royale. Though the ED hints that there may be some more character exploration on LLENN's side later this season, then the OP may show that she'll have to PVP Pito again at some point (or the OP could lie, that wouldn't be the first time).

I considered it, but having missed almost the entire SAO story, I wasn't sure if I wanted to get enough background to make it all make sense.

I've missed a lot of everything, to the point that the holes in my media knowledge are only partly patched over by memes; Sword Art Online is one of the gaps that I probably should fill in someday, but haven't gotten around to yet.

FWIW, SAO Alternative GGO is watchable without having knowledge of SAO prime. There's one set of character motivations that you'll miss a little background on but I'm pretty sure they give you enough there to understand anyway.

It's focused on an entirely new set of characters who play the shooter VRMMO and have very little overlap with the main story cast.

Yeah, GGO is completely watchable without any knowledge of SAO. You may be a little bit confused by a throwaway reference or cameo here and there but that's kind of par for the course with anime.

I just re-watched SAO Alternative with a friend who hadn't seen it, and she's very hyped so, since I hadn't started watching season 2, we'll next be watching that together.

Loner Life in Another World is quite entertaining - the sort of just very slightly off-beat isekai story that appeals to me. It's not hugely complicated or well animated but is entertaining, which is more important IMHO.
A class of high schoolers get summoned to another world, allowed to pick from a list of skills and then dropped in the woods. The protagonist tried to escape from the summoning, winding up last to pick and more or less whines until the god giving the skills just dumps all of them on him. This is naturally quite an advantage. Our hero prefers to avoid the rest of the class (being a self-declared loner) and just go it alone, but is fairly easily persuaded to help them. A lot.

D.

To go with Lonely attack in another world, some of his skills activtly discourage being in a group. Plus several of his classmates being jerks and pretty much every single one of them - including him, really - being varying levels of completely insane.

I've read a big chunk of the Manga for this one. :3

Our Magical Girls are different (sorta): Magilumiere Co. Ltd

"Magical girls" are no longer your typical teen, but are employed by corporations fighting monsters called "Kai". Fifteen years before the story starts, things reached Symphogear levels of dangerous, and we meet our protagonist as she stumbles upon a small company that wants to be ready should another Calamity happen.

Having just started, we also have season two of Shangri-la Frontier! I went on about it a couple seasons ago, and this is a direct continuation of things. Promises to be super good going by the Manga!

I only have two new anime on my watchlist this season:

Demon Lord 2099

Essentially, what happens when a dark overlord comes back to life after 500 years only to discover his fantasy kingdom has turned into Shadowrun? I'm honestly not sure about this one, but the first episode dodged a lot of the obvious "fsh out of water" tropes.

Mecha-Ude

Some of you may recall the pilot that was produced via Kickstarter 8 years ago. Well, it finally made it into production, and while the story is pretty by the numbers (a boy bonds with an unusual lifeform, and hijinks ensue), the animation is extremely Trigger-esque and probably worth at least a glance for that alone.

It's also become somewhat infamous for having just a straight up clip from a Tokoyami Towa stream that featured the ID girls playing on a billboard screen.

Even in 2099, Hololive still exists, and Towa still streams~

I don't know, but I gave this one a look, and now I have a new series to follow.

It appears that the first step is, "Livestream pre-cyberware games."
