#0, Reading "Symphony" To My Wife...
Posted by BobSchroeck on Oct-22-01 at 01:26 PM
Well, on Friday, I finished reading NXE to Peggy (more about that in the appropriate area), and I gave her a choice of what I would read to her next.

Now, normally, giving Peggy a choice -- any kind of choice -- is like invoking the old saw about the mule between two piles of hay. You could grow old and exhaust your retirement funds waiting for an answer if you don't force her to pick one, fast. (Where "fast" is on the order of the half-life of Carbon-12.)

Anyway, I presented a rather good (in my opinon) Ranma fic ("Genma's Daughter" by Deb Goldsmith, for those who care), and (because we'd just finished fansubs of the entire run of Utena the night before) "Symphony".

Peg looked at me and asked, "Symphony is by Gryphon, right?"

"Yes," I replied.

"Then I want to hear Symphony. Gryphon writes quality stories."

(So there, all you Eyrie-haters. <grin>)

So I started reading Wounded Rose to her on Friday night. Last night (Sunday), at 11:30 PM EDT, I finished Christmas Rose, and this morning I had to assure her I'd have A Rose for the New Year printed out for further reading tonight.

My god, man, you've created a monster. <grin>

This is Peggy's first exposure to the UF universe, and I think she's enjoying it quite a bit, although I do have to fill in a lot of background for her where it's necessary (which acutally hasn't been often). I have been ordered to let Gryphon know that she is delighted by Azalynn and Devlin. (Devlin's trademark "I'm not X, but I -am- Y" catchphrases usually end up making her roll off the couch laughing.) She also appears to be identifying strongly with Kate. (When we got to the Mike Carpenter sequence, I wasn't allowed to stop reading for close to two hours.) She is properly puzzled in all the right places about what's going on with Saionji and Miki's arrivals, too, and I can't wait until we get to "Azalynn's Winter Break," "The Courtship of Princess Dessler" and Juri's arrival to see how she takes the developments therein.

I just hope I don't run out of Symphony before Gryphon's finished the next parts! I could get seriously killed... <grin>
