I also really liked this. I'm just going to call out some bits that made me smile in particular:

  • Vacationing movie star Gojira Nakajima. (Is his ability to transform into a smaller, apparently humanoid form specific to UF, or did it show up in the original movies?) (Am I confused, or is this bit completely unrelated to the A-plot?)
  • "Please understand, however, that I am not an actual, practicing mad scientist at this time."
  • "Sure, the stories I had heard painted the creature as about 20 feet tall and possibly related to the xenomorphs of Acheron, but I should have known that there was likely to be a certain degree of exaggeration involved there."
  • "I might have been little more than a vaguely man-shaped mass of bitterness and disillusion by that point, but I had standards, dammit" (Gryphon's narrative quippery is excellent throughout)
  • "You do not have to like it." I'm not deeply familiar with X-23's source material, but her characterization is spot on with what little I have seen.
  • She-Who-Severs. Despite that the Oh My Goddess version of Skuld is much more the sort of person one would want to spend time with, I have a soft spot for the original mythology's version of the Norns, and IMO throwing in a bit of that works very well in context.
  • Asari crimebosses have been a force to be reckoned with on Omega for quite some time, eh?
  • "Do they speak Standard on What?"
  • Gryphon does a fine job of balancing Laura's need to take Kimura out personally with his own responsibility to not let Kimura wreak havoc on New Avalon. So often you see the supers and the police at cross purposes when this sort of thing comes up.
  • I wonder where Laura learned to play the accordion.
  • Has Deadpool actually appeared onstage so far?
  • "The galaxy turns. History has moved on."
  • I'm missing nearly all the references at the climax of the battle, but it certainly makes an impressive tableau.
  • "Why do I feel like we've just witnessed one of those Butch meets Sundance moments that should have been prevented?"
