I went to a James Taylor concert a few hours ago, where he related that his song First of May was inspired by his father. When May 1 rolled around his father would at some point of the day, inevitably, say "Hooray hooray! First of May! Outdoor fucking starts today!" JT then proceed to apologize for "saying fuck in front of the K-I-D-S."

Knowing that context, some of the lyrics become obvious:

It's a rite of spring
A horizontal thing
The sweetest sort of dance
Hidden in among the plants

But being Californian, I didn't even know there was a schedule to this sort of thing!
