Desolation Angels was one of his kinda-sorta-autobiographical novels, in which the protagonist experiences a personal revelation of sorts while alone on a mountain. (That is an absurd oversimplification, of course, but it's Kerouac - you can't really summarize Kerouac in fewer words than Kerouac used. Or at least I can't. :)
