I dunno, I'd have slipped straight into "What, do you..." but still used, "What are you, a...". Phrasing varies based on intent. Or at least, whether I'd be using "are" or "do".

I can, just about, read the original in the intended manner, but it doesn't feel quite so natural if I try and read it that way.
