One of my favorite things about the Wedge Defense Force is that its spacecraft carrier deck personnel do all of this business... in vacsuits... for no reason other than it's cool. :)

In a similar vein, YT's almighty algorithm yakked up this little nugget that it thought would catch my fancy, which my mind decided was "What if Top Gun: Maverick was made in the UF-verse."

EXT. DAY interior shot of VF-1 cockpit. GRYPHON drops into the seat and runs his eyes over the controls.

COUNTER SHOT: The instrument panel. We're clearly in an ancient mark of the Valkyrie, with only two VDUs (which appear to be CRTs!) and a wide array of old-fashioned "steam gauges"--several of which aren't even there. Everything is faded and tired-looking. GRYPHON runs his fingers over some of the worn switchgear as if trying to recall a familiar but long-neglected piece of music.

TIGHT SHOT on GRYPHON's face, with some of the panel reflected in the facebowl of his helmet. He looks... not dismayed, exactly, but certainly out of his comfort zone.

EXT. DAY following the tail of the Valkyrie setting up to land when suddenly it jolts as the left engine belches out fire and smoke before visibly dying. Cut to GRYPHON giving the controls a momentary panicked look while KOZUE looks over her shoulder before facing back front with a pained expression.

KOZUE
(resigned despair)
Please don't tell me we lost an engine.

GRYPHON
(matter of factly)
Alright, I won't tell you that.

KOZUE
(bracing in her seat for the inevitable)

The moment I read this, I distinctly heard Jeremy Clarkson saying "things could be worse!", though it took a hot second for my brain to spit out what would actually be worse; it settled on "dead-stick landing in a Y-Wing".

INT SCENE: GRYPHON has just put the finishing touches on his repair work: kludging together parts from about six different airframes to try and get the early Valkyrie working again after a... suboptimal landing. Bits of it are already starting to fall off.

There was a character in the X-Wing series who had to land a Y-Wing with his repulsorlifts shot, landing on the skids like an atmospheric craft. Then, once he finally came to a stop, his ejection seat went off, and the gravity was low enough on that moon that it was fired at escape velocity and someone had to retrieve him.
