#0, graphics fiddling: RZC flag

For reasons that may be elaborated on later, I was just re-making a higher-res version of the Republic of Zeta Cygni flag, and I ended up with a couple of variations of the revised design that I wanted to get the class's input on.Type 1, an updated version of the "classic" RZC flag with the Star of Avalon remaining in the upper left corner:
Type 2, the updated field with the Star of Avalon relocated into the middle of the cross, which is another historically traditional location for extra details on Nordic-cross flags:

Both look great. I like the aesthetics, and geometry, of the second flag more to be completely honest. DaemeonX

I like both, and I think either would work just fine. I do notice a bit of a contrast conflict with the type 2, but nothing too significant, just noticeable. That is, the gold star isn't quite as distinct against the lighter blue as it is against the darker when it's in the corner. But it's a minor quibble at best.

The positioning in the second also causes an optical illusion that makes the star look smaller. So perhaps it would work better with the star larger to compensate.

I like the idea of this, with the star large enough to overlap the corners of the dark blue fields.-- dbrandon

Something like that? It's not overlapping, but the center of the star is fitted exactly to the center of the cross. I'll have to remake the star if I want to use it on bigger scales--it was originally made as a gif in a lower-rez era, so it's a bit jaggy when scaled up... --G. -><- Benjamin D. Huh. On the one hand, I didn't expect it to be quite that large when scaled up (reaching all the way to the bottom edge), that's a visualization fail on my part. On the other hand, I'm kind of digging it. I feel like it slightly de-emphasizes the Nordic/Christian cross symbology.-- dbrandon

I was thinking just enough to counteract the illusion, but that does work quite well.

I think #3 would look best with the star -slightly- smaller, somewhere about halfway between the size of #2 and #3. I knocked it up in Illustrator real quick:![]()
I'll happily send you the file if you want it, or convert it to whatever format you would like as long as Illustrator 2020 can :) -------------- Lime2K The One True Evil Overlord

I'll explain what this is about tomorrow. For now, let's call it a teaser. :) >I'll happily send you the file if you want it, or convert it to >whatever format you would like as long as Illustrator 2020 can :) That would be great! The equipment I'm using for the above project uses bitmaps, but I can work with SVG files and convert them on my end. --G. -><- Benjamin D. I am not sure, but I think this might look a little better still if the gold star and the light blue cross were moved up and to the left a bit. Consider the light blue cross as divided into four rays, one for each star point, then make the upward, downward, and leftward rays proportional to the length of the star point in that direction, if that makes sense? The upper left dark blue field should still be square though.

It would be possible to preserve the Nordic cross and align the star with it by rotating the star 90 degrees counterclockwise; the problem there is that the Star of Avalon has never been described like that... hmm. (For the record, I didn't make the Zetan flag a Nordic cross for the "cross" part so much as the "Nordic".) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Oh yeah, I promised to tell you what this is about, didn't I? Well, through a curious sequence of events, I seem to have taken up machine embroidery with the backing of my father, who wants to turn it into some kind of side gig for his retirement (... and mine, effectively, upon reflection). The Zetan-flag patch is an early project I've undertaken to get used to the digitizing software used to make patterns for my machine and build up some more experience running the machine itself. So, once I get the design perfected and we figure out how our little enterprise's website is going to work, I'll probably be offering them for sale. And maybe before that second phase, if anybody here wants what is essentially a test model. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Any particular reason this flag uses 5-2-14 lengthwise rather than the 5-2-9 commonly used by the Nordic flags?

The asymmetry of the star AND the cross in the second version is tripping my OCD, so I'd go with v1.

I think I prefer the Type 1, but it's a photo finish between that and the Type 3.

I think I prefer Type 1, but I could see any of them.------ Authors of our fates Orchestrate our fall from grace Poorest players on the stage Our defiance drives us straight to the edge
