Well, not -entirely.- Wapiko's very intelligent (and obviously very strong) but she doesn't give a wet slap about science.

At the moment, you'd be right...

Presuming Freeport and such towns still existed. Freeport pretty much ceased to exist during the Fourth World War, and the Third Texas Revolution finished it off. The oil companies rebuilt further inland, and since they already owned most of Lake Jackson...

(For those who don't know, Lake Jackson is one of the few towns to survive which was begun as a work camp for an oil field. It's a little less than ten miles further inland than Freeport, and about the same size. Both lie about sixty miles south of Houston, which Gaos overflew in the story en route to the story.)
