>Norse Mythology, preferably not dry and textbookish... Well, I recommend Wagners' Ring Cycle as a starting place. You could then get a copy of a Norse edda or two. Beowulf would not be agood example because it's Christianized. Other interesting sources would have to be the Sandman "Season of the Mists" for a look at the Norse and other pantheons.
I also picked up some good books from the library. Most books on the subject tend to be decent because it is obscure. I don't know of a definitely work on the subject. Clearly it's time I corrected that.
