Yeah, I was on my back a couple days... Actually I think I only had day or so worth of pills.

I got to watch.

He injected lidocaine of novacaine or something like that into the toe and surrounds (and a needle in the webbing between your toes is not fun). After it numbed he tied off the toe to all but eliminate the bleeding.

I was able to raise my head and look down at the toe. The nurse kept trying to to push my head back down, but when the doc noticed he said "If he wants to watch, let him watch." Freaky watching a scalpel just slide through your flesh with no blood, and while not being able to feel it. It was like watching someone slice bolagna. Digging out the infected tissue and the root of the nail involved lots of hooked things and a lot of force - enough to tug on my leg. I couldn't feel it in the toe, but I could feel the force on my leg.

It healed from the surgery fine - it was just reinjuring it years later.
