Actually, from what little I could tell, he *did* save Rei. She was inside Unit-01 the whole time. Her hair kept growing, just like Asuka’s, so at the end, when he was sending everyone off, she had this *mane* of hair while she was sitting in an entry plug.

That or it was more horseshit, but I think this one was fairly literal.
