The absolute worst part of the movie is how Shinji and Mari, who have interacted probably about once before this, go from literally nothing to the core romantic pairing of the film, as if Anno just crammed it down there as hard as he possibly could just to tick off everyone who had supported Shinji/Asuka from the beginning. It's the most hamfisted, poorly written hookup you could possibly think of.
