that someone seems to have stolen the actual sword Durandal from the wall of a village church where it's been stuck (so the legend goes) for the past 1300 years.

I would absolutely play that. Assassin's Creed is at its best when it's messing around in the gray area between history and legend and folklore, IMO, and the Chansons are there already.
